We could use any help going after our Apple Snail died mysteriously and quickly.only weeks after going in the tank. He seemed fine and happy then one day on his side with brown "foot", or sucker bit and lifeless. No seal on shell.

Nothing changed in tank but a week before I had added an external filter, leaving existing filtration in place.

I want to replace snail but is it same water tests as with fish to check nothing harmful in there?

Thanks

Dave

What is your Ph? I read that if its acidic below 7.0 then its bad for them as it corrodes the shell. I have no experience with them though.

Hi Dave

I cant keep applesnails anymore either, i used to breed them and have tank full of them, now i get three or four and they all die one at a time.

Yet all the fish are fine, i dont think its anything to do with your water quality as they can live in quite bad conditions it might be a food competition thing ie i have a few plecs and the plecs are breeding and i think they are all rivals for the algae and veggie i put in. Snails are slow and i imagine fish get first pickings also fish will nibble at the snail causing it to retreat and therefore it doesnt eat. Its the only reason i can think of. Yes low ph and low calcuim with cause shell deteriation but at a slow rate, i had snails with badly split and holes in shells they still survive for a year or so. di

Sorry to hear about your apple snail. How much were you feeding? The huge appetites of these guys shouldn't be underestimated, they can eat and eat! If your water is on the acidic side they wouldn't do as well, they need calcium to maintain and grow their shells.
