Apistos Spawned Again

When breeding you'll notice the female guarding a cave or something, attacking anything which gets too close. The male will also get more aggressive. The females markings will also get more defined, often with a yellow tint to the body.

How do you tell before that happens. Don't have a clue.

I'm guessing it's like any other cichlid in the respect of territories, when a pair (or harem?) are formed the fish will guard an area trying to keep it to themselves in prepartion for hanky panky :) It should be clear to see, the aggression will probably be noticed. When courting my HRP displayed much brighter colours than before and the male circled the female a bit as if to say "look at me, ain't I a nice fella!", this might well be a tell tale sign early on.

well looks like both females have spawned, but the male showing no interest in eitheir of them!!!

Hi,Scotty congrats on the spawning, more often than not the female tends to the spawn and the male just stands guard defending them. What Apisto's are they?

Ian

they are Apistogramma Cacatoides – Double Red,the male isn't even guarding them,he's off doing his own thing, they have both spawned in the main tank, which is the only one i have,so nature will just have to run its course, some might survive if their lucky.

cheers

I dont blame him,its bad enough getting earache of one pregnant female nevermind two..lol are you sure he's fertilized them?

Ian

i very much doubt he has fertilised them, the are all quite young,so will the eggs just eventually be eaten?

cheers
scott

Usually they will eat the unfertilized eggs. Why dont you think hes fertilized them, did you see them lay the eggs? These are quite capable of breeding quite young.

Ian

these are the eggs i found under the bogwood, the reason i think he hasn't fertilised them is because where the eggs are he can't fit it,the females are a good bit smaller than the male

cheers

They do look like cacatuoides eggs to me,they usually hatch in about 4 days you might be surprised. Is she still guarding and fanning them? your lucky i lost both my female Cacs one to and accident with a syphon pipe and one just died.. and i cant find any females anywhere for my lonely males. let us know how it goes.

Ian

well if i manage to eventually get any that survive,i will give you 2 or 3 females

cheers
scott

Thanks i may well take you up on that :good:

I recently got myself a reverse trio of wild Pelvicachromis Subosellatus 'Matadi' which will be my next breeding project as soon as my 3 week old batch of Angelfish are old enough to move on and your welcome to a couple of pairs if you want, they are a stunning little West African Dwarf Cichlid especially the female in her courting dress.
