hey all,

Just a quick, update on my A. panduro.

As some of you know I lost my tank bred pair a little while back, but the wild pair have been going strong.
Today when I was looking in their tank I saw fry!
these are well passed the wriggle stages and are fully formed little fish. From what Ive seen on the net they must be about two weeks old, they arent kept in a big tank but I dont really pay much attention to the tank, as the pair were pretty skitish when I got them, so I tend to leave them to their own devices, only disturbing them for a quick water change or to feed them.
So I hadnt noticed the wriggles, although a few weeks back I though the female had died as I hadnt seen he for ages, and when I move the bog wood she was hiding under it, obviously gaurding the eggs.

Currently the fry are either grey or transparent (cant tell as the water is discoloured by tannins from the monapi) with grey bars/speckling.

As I didnt even know they were around I havent been feeding them, so I gather they have been munching on detris, algae and anything they find living on the clump of java moss in the tank.

Its funny really as I never expected these to breed and yet they have and the fry are doing well, where as my resuced pair of angels spawn every few weeks and never seem to be able to look after the brood long enough for them to be able to fend for themselves. Ok so they arent alone in the tank, there are two ottos and 3 BNs but still.

If these A. panduro fry survive and I can keep them spawning it might make me try some other species of Apistogramma as I do like the looks of other species.

When they are big enough, if they live that long, I will try and get some pictures.

Well, I moved the adults out of the tank away form the fry, as they had started to show signs are chasing and possibly eating them.

Just been watching the adults in their new tank, looks like they may be getting ready to spawn again.
Gonna have to buy some more small tanks :D

Once they are grown out gonna have to find someone or someplace to buy them lol.

Just googled them pretty fish! congrats on the fry, its nice to get a suprise like that.

Thanks,

I went to the shop were I bought the parents to see if they would be interested in by them. They said they dont normally do it, but because of what they are and they are from wild parents they would when they reach about 2cm.
Gives me another reason to go back :) I picked up three L. brichardi today as well. Ive wanted some of these for a long time but never seen them for sale. I have alwats been a catfish and oddball person, looks like I have caught the dwarf cichlid bug.

Just been to feed the A. panduro parents in their new home, and thought I would check the monopi wood in their tank as I thought they could have spawned again, and looks like they have, there are eggs under the wood.

Will have to write down the specs of my setup, as these are hard to breed Ive been told?

Great news, I love having cichlids, just love watching them spawn and raise young.

Congratulations :good: Im just getting into Apisto's myself,i would definitely buy some of these off you. Ive just set up a couple of tanks one is currently occupied by a pair of triple red apisto cacatuoides and the other is empty,so if your looking to offload some give us a shout.

Regards
Ian

Hey Ian,

It doesnt say in your profile where you are but when they are big enough ill give you a shout, I already have a buyer for them all, but I'm sure I can keep a few to sell to you, if they make it that long.

They biggest are currently about 4-5mm so they are growing really well.

Hi James,im in Stockport where are you from?

Ian

Hi Ian,

I am from Nr Chester. I actually bought the A. panduro from Stockport, from The Abyss. I was there Sunday too.
And funny enough I had to go to Stockport yesterday too, not spent much time there before and then Ive been there twice in two days, lol.

Hi,the Abyss is about 5 mins from me. How long ago did you get them from there? he never has nothing like that when i go in,but saying that it is the best aquatic store around here, the fish are usually very high quality.

Ian

Hi,just thought id ask how are the fry going?

Ian

I have just finished doing the first proper clean of their tank,

I took the chance to fish them out to see how many I had, I found about 3-4 dead fish of a varying sizes.

I currently have 22 fry, all of varying size, and looking at them they could be seperate spawns?

anyway here is the pic, click it for a bigger version.

the photo isnt great taken with my iPhone

Hi James, bloody hell there tiny aint they. What you feeding them on...rivita mini snacks? Apisto fry are slow growers. Could well be 2 separate spawns but its also quite common for some fry to grow quicker others, its hard to tell from that picture. But congrats on getting them this far :good:

Ian

They are tiny and much slower growing that anything I have bred before. I am currently feeding the Kikari - first bites, which says "promotes rapid growth" although it only has a 54% protein content.

I may start feeding them the same granules I did with the cories which was a lot higher in protein.

I am not using live foods as currently I have no where to store them, and last time I ended up with a flour beetle infestation, which took a good few months to clean up, (I know bad housing keeping on my part)

I have read that after 2 months they should ber around 12mm, and some of the must be heading that way soon. Also when you think about it they arent huge fish when fully grown, so the fry are bound to be tiny! ;)
