Apisto Eggs!

Hi all,

I've just been doing a water change on my tank and noticed my female Apistogramma Agasizzi spending a lot of time in a little plant pot. On closer inspection I discovered she's guarding about 50 eggs stuck to the underside of the pot. Bonus!

I'd like to try and raise the fry and I'm wondering what the best course of action is. I have a small 18x12x12" tank with baby Emperor Tetras in but they're big enough to go back in the main tank now so I could use that and move the pot into it.

Do I need to do this if they're going to survive? Should I move the adults in with the eggs?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If the stocking is what it says in your sig then i would just leave them in there. If its the apisto first lot then they could eat them but after a few attempts they will get the hang of it and be great parents once they do.

Hi again,

So after 2 lots of eggs being eaten I decided to move the pair to my 18x12x12" tank earlier in the week. The baby Emperors are now in the main tank so they've had some time to themselves...

Guess what?!?! Eggs! Just not sure what to do now!

The female is guarding them with her life again in the little plant pot and the male can't get anywhere near. He's looking a bit lost swimming up and down the glass at the other end of the tank.

Do I remove him only and leave the female to be mum, assuming the eggs have been fertilized? Or leave them both in there?

The tank's also due a water change. Do I postpone this or carry on maintenance as usual?

I would be inclinded to leave them in situ as any disturbance would surely see them devouring their clutch.
The male will defend a territory and the female will defend the eggs. She will move them to a hollow in the substrate once they hatch and feeding should begin. You will need to get brineshrimp on a hatching cycle to feed the fry although they may take to prepared foods but BS is the best.
If I were going to do anything I would just separate the tank / spawning site with some glass or perspex and let the parents do their thing.
