When I asked the guy at my LFS what the safest way to lower the pH/soften the water to a level most comfortable for German Rams was (I'm looking into getting a couple, but not until I'm sure I can get my tank in peak condition, because I hear they're somewhat fragile) He advised that the Tap Water Purifier by API was the best way to go if I didn't want to go for a full-blown RO system, which he said Rams don't necessarily need.

The fact that the purifier is $30 instead of $200 is probably the most attractive aspect, though I'm not really sure what I would forfeit in getting the cheaper option. Has anyone used this product before? Is it something common that I've just completely missed out on, or is it just another waste-of-money contraption?

Also, what's the difference between this purifier and, say, the one that filters the water that comes out of the fridge? Or one of those Brita/PUR pitchers?

If anyone could get me some inside information I'd appreciate it. :)

You have to replace the $16 filter cartridge after filtering 25-125 gallons. It's not worth it and would add up to way more than $200 after a few months of use.

Ah, there's the catch. I knew there would be one. I guess I should know better than to think I can get away cheap when it comes to fish, lol. Thanks for the reply, regardless. :)
