Based on advice on the forums here, I decided to buy some API Tap Water Conditioner. I normally use Seachem Prime, and probably will during my weekly change tomorrow, and I'm used to adding it to the buckets as I fill them with fresh water, then adding this water to the tank mere minutes later. I also temperature match the water, meaning I use some warm water, so it's very handy for dealing with potential heavy metals. Very convenient. Can I do the same with API Tap Water Conditioner, or should I wait a certain amount of time first? Just have to make absolutely certain.

Thanks.

I am now using API Tap Water Conditioner, and have been since about February.  It becomes immediately effective, just like Prime or most others.

Byron.

I have been using this dechlorinator for years. It is very easy to use - I just add 2 drops to my 7.5 litre bucket of water then put it straight into the tank.

API water conditioner contains just sodium thiosulphate (to treat chlorine) and tetra sodium EDTA (to remove metals). Nothing to 'detoxify' ammonia, nothing to 'promote the slime coat' - which is why I use it.

It's very cost effective as well, I've used it to cycle tanks before were I didn't want to mess around with detoxifying ammonia.
I still use Prime as preference because the process of detoxifying chloramines can produce ammonia as an end product, if you have chloramines in your tapwater, so the Prime supposedly makes this by-product ammonia safe while your biofilter deals with it.

Thank you for the replies.

One more thing...sometimes, I've left the cap off the Prime while cleaning the tank, perhaps for 30 minutes or longer (sometimes I've even forgotten about it!). That won't affect the Prime, will it? It doesn't currently have as strong the rotten egg smell as I would have thought it should have, and it's been open for a good few months (I believe there is less of a smell when it is newly opened).
