So I've used the API tap water conditioner for a long time now and I've loved it. I usually order it off Amazon along with some other stuff I might want or need at the time because its fairly cbeap on there. But now I've tried looking for it, and it's not sold anywhere on the site?? They have other API products, but not the normal tap water conditioner.
At least Amazon sells prime, though. So I'll probably be using that now. But my main question here is if it's safe to instantly switch from using API to using Prime? I don't want to shock the fish. I'm thinking it's perfectly fine, but I just want to make sure.

There is one difference as far as I can tell from the API site. Their Tap Water conditioner does not detoxify ammonia while Prime does so.

It looks like API has decided the fact that their Tap Water Conditioner doesn't detox ammonia has made it less in demand and may be discontinuing it. I would attribute this decision to the fact that API has other dechlors that do detox. ammonia and that many water companies now use chloramine.

When the chlorine component of chloramine is removed that leaves the ammonia component. In most cycled tanks the bacteria are able to handle the ammonia. But to be safe from higher residual chloramine levels being about to render ammonia harmless is desirable.

I have excellent well water and never need to use dechlor of any sort. However, I dislike those which contain slime coat protection, especially if this is aloe vera. Prime detoxifies the ammonia by converting it to ammonium. While the bacteria prefer ammonia they can use ammonium albeit less efficiently. In a cycled tank with fish this offers extra protection which I believe is not really needed as the rersidual ammonia level is minimal.

In tanks with an acid pH (<7.0) ammonia turns mostly into ammonium naturally. So there is usually no need to have a chemical for doing this.

I do have small bottles of both Prime and Amquel. I use them when bleach dipping plants so I can immediately put them into a tank after the dip and tap water rinse, I do a dunk in dechlored water. I also used to sell at fish events where I had to use some amount of the hotel tap water which I do need to dechlorinate.

Still available on amazon canada and Germany. Petco still sells it. I highly doubt that they would discontinue.
API Tap Water Conditioner is the best conditioner on the market. Fewer chemicals, less issues for fish. And its very concentrated.

It's still available on UK Amazon as well. And it's still listed on API's website.

You should be fine 👍🏻😊
Thank you!!

Yeah, I agree. I don't think it's discontinued, it's just that Amazon stopped selling it on their U.S market page, which is weird...
API wouldn't discontinue it like that. At least not now or any time soon. That product is one of their most popular items.

Since I don't have chloramines, I'll take the API product over Prime anytime. There's a local dog supply store with about 2 feet of shelf space for fish, and they carry it.
Here, as there is a fair sized consumer boycott of US made goods, I'm waiting for someone to step in with an old school, cheap to make thiosulfate dechlorinator. There's a small local market company growing fast, with basic treatments. They haven't released that one yet. I am hoping it comes before I run out of the old stuff.
I don't want aloe, or other unnecessary bells and whistles. I just want to neutralize chlorine.
But switching between the two is no problem. If you have a fish that's been hiding its farts by blaming Prime, it may be embarrassed though.
