I know there was a thread on this a while back, but cannot seem to find it.

When I test for nitrite using my API test kit, and after waiting 5 min, the color is like a gray color? If I remember correctly, does this mean that the nitrite is off the charts?

The expiration date is 10-07.

Any ideas?

Thanks guys!

When you 1st put the drops in, what colour does it go? If it goes dark purple immediately, then after waiting its a weird colour, then yes, the reading is off the scale. I assume you are cycling?

Yes of course, fishless cycle.

I will do another nitrite test when I get a chance; it will be about an hour or so.

Thanks for your response!

Yes it means its off the chart! I had the exact same thing with my fishless cycle - thought the kit was buggered and went and bought a new one only to get the same with that lol

The drops will go dark blue and then turn a deep rich indigo colour after hitting the bottom, but you might have to wait up to 10 seconds for that to happen. But yes - don't worry about it!

Well, I tested again and the drops did NOT turn to purple right away.

I think the color of the nitrite is between 0 ppm and .25 ppm.

So, fingers crossed, after nearly 3 weeks I am starting to see nitrite, even with a full filter of mature filter media from my other large tank.

Get yourself a glass and mix 10% tank water with 90% tap water and test that - this should be back on the charts.

Yes, I have read about diluting the solution. However, I do not believe that my nitrite is off the charts as the drops are not turning to zero right when they enter the test tube. But you know, I am just going to try it anyways. I will post the results back up here.

After diluting the solution, the color of the nitrite test remained at zero. So, I am not off the charts, I think I am just somewhere between 0 ppm and .25 ppm. Hopefully tomorrow the test will be something different.

Sorry for all the posts...

But, as you can see the color does not match any color on the chart.

Sorry for the bad quality, I had to use my phone.
