Api Ammonia

add 10 drops instead of 8, i found it makes the test a little clearer if you are trying to deine yellow to green-yellow

Why would you do that?, if the manufacter designed the test with 8 why would fudge the results?

if the contrast isnt clear, adding a few extra drops saturates the water more.

it wont work if you are matching against the colour chart, but if you are trying to define between 0 and .25 then it makes it a little clearer

This may sound stupid, but do these tests go off over time? I've had my API Master Tester kit for about a year now and I am worried in case my results become less accurate because the chemicals are off.
I have looked everywhere on the bottles and box for a date but can't find one!
Thanks, Amy.

Yes they do go off. Api don't put a use by date as such. I once emailed them to ask, and they said

....each reagent bottle has a Lot # printed on the bottle. The last four digits are the month and year of manufacture. Example: Lot # 28A0108. This is a pH reagent manufactured in January of 2008.

Wide Range pH, High Range pH, Ammonia, Nitrate, Phosphate, Copper, Calcium and GH all last for three years.
Nitrite and KH will last for four years.
Freshwater pH (low range) and Pond Care Salt Level will last for five years.
I would not use or trust these kits after they have expired.

Ah thats great. Like I said, I have had mine for roughly a year now, so at least I know I've got at least another 2 before the ammonia and nitrate go off.
Thanks for that =]
