Okay here's the deal.....

I have a 45 gallon fish tank that i want to keep at home and have it be a community tank....one problem....i go to college and i live 2 hours away from home. I know how to keep tropical fish cause I used to have a tank back in the day then gave it to a friend who wanted it more than me. but now i miss it alot and i would really like to get back into the scene of things...is there anyway it would be possible to pull this off? like how often would i need to come home and clean the tank? the fish will be fed by my sister everyday but like id be the one cleaning it and stuff...so im curious about like water changes and cleaning the tank and if i could some how pull this off? i just miss having a fish tank :*) any ideas welcome..... :)

Thank You for the replies.....

To me it just doesn't make sense to invest and maintain a tank that you aren't around to see. What about getting a little tank for yourself at school, if it's a possiblity - better a small tank you can enjoy then a big tank you're not around to appreciate, IMO.

I'm stuf with the same dilema. My 3 tanks I have stocked now are at my house and I'm at school an hour away. Luckily I can come home once a week and chane my water but my real problem is my 29 gallon thats planted and has serious algae problems. I can't do anything about them 'cuz I'm not home enough to test and dose and test again. See what your school's policy is on tanks in the dorms and see if u can bring it to school with you, my school will let me bring one....but not my 55 gal :-(

I think you'd probably have to come home once every two weeks at least to clean it, you might be able to get away with once every three weeks if you had good filtration, understock it, and plant it. You might also want to teach your sister how to look for signs of illness in your fish and how to treat it. My grandmother has a 10 gallon with 1 dwarf gourami, 2 yo-yo loaches (I know, bad, but you can't tell an 86 year old woman that,) and 3 otos. It gets cleaned less than once a month, and the only explanation I have for the fish being relatively healthy is the piece of hornwort I put in there when I set the tank up for her... That thing grows like mad!!! It's using a good deal of the waste in the water and keeping it surprisingly clean.

thank you for the replies....i guess ill just wait till i get out of school....the wait will be worth it. it just kinda stinks:( but oh well just gives me ALOT of time to look forward to and research lol.

I got a 3 foot tropical set up when I was eleven, I moved out of home when I was 15. I left my tank at mums house and I got it back when I was 19. I might not have been able to see it but I knew it was there. When I got it back I went and brought a heap of new fish and still have nearlly all of them now, and alot more. As long as you get back home every 2 or so weeks then there should'nt be a problem coz you can enjoy them when you go home. If you are away at school you probably don't have time to have a fish tank there with you anyway.
