Recently, after reading through an article about food types available for fish in the amazon, I thought I'd try more fruit in the diet for my fish. I tried strawberry last week, apple more recently and just now banana. They didn't like the strawberry or apple, but were uber enthusiastic about the banana (makes sense for the regions involved really!). My fish were almost as frantic as they are with blood worm

Next time I'll need to put in several pieces, I'm using kebab skewers, easy to put in and take out

The cichlids diet is a mix of this now:
  • Hikari floating cichlid pellets
  • Catfish pellets
  • Blood worm
  • Brine shrimp
  • Cucumber
  • Deshelled/Mashed Pea
  • Banana
  • Papaya
  • And a touch of algae wafer and flake if they're extra hungry and steal from others

What are your experiences of food, any other general good food types to try out?

Thats a good tip. I'll give the banana a go. How ripe was it when you tried it ?

Mine also like baby spinach leaves and lettuce (of course !).

Alternative dried foods that my large cichlids really like are Nutrafin Max veggy sticks (which I need to break up for them as they are too big in the packet). And also Tetra Pro Vegetable, which I bought today. My female sev has recently started to reject all dried food, but she ate these up.

I was going to try mine with banana trouble is the kids eat them all first!

The banana was nice and ripe, 1-2 days away from starting to go bad I'd say...

I bet proper water cress would go down nice too...I need to pick up some spinach too!

Next thing is to get some gelatine I think and try blending mixes together and setting them into easy to feed blocks with old blood worm trays. I get away with frozen pea blocks I prepare in a big batch, these get chucked in and munched through very quickly still partly frozen, but using a tiny amount of gelatine will make it much easier and cleaner for the tank I think.

Normally the same here, my son scoffs them down 3 at a time! He's only 6!! He didn't want this banana because it had turned a bit black on the outside

So I shared it with the fish

Discovered the baby severums like spiders :hyper: one dropped into the tank while I was doing a waterchange, poor thing didnt stand a chance, was amusing seeing one of the babies tearing round the tank with a leg hanging from its mouth though!

Going to try the banana!

My Sevs like lettuce, but my Oscar spat it out in disgust.

I feed mine insects as well. Accidently left the window open as it got dark a few weeks ago, and hundreds of moths flew in. I wondered how on earth am I going to get them out of the house, when I thought that the fish must eat loads of insects in the wild, so why not give the bugs to them? They LOVE them  They have moths, daddy longlegs, blue bottles (when I can catch the buggers) and gnats :good: The Sevs love them too, but hard to get them past Boris. They get the odd few though

Moths are a favorite of mine too (well not me personally the fish  ), they get really cross when they land on the outside of the tank, so now of an evening once the kids are in bed I lift all the lids and turn the main lights off just leaving the tank lights on so any insects are attracted to the tank lights, the carpet gets a bit wet when the Texas jump for moths  Little Rusty my oscar doesnt really like insects yet!

In all seriousness they work really well for the most part, one end in the sand, food just off the substrate, and the other end with the handle leaning against a BIG piece of bogwood ;)

Tried a spider once, didn't work, but that was a long time ago when the fish were a lot smaller....insects look out!

lol, sounds effortless...my lid holds my lights so it's not possible for me, I'll just have to sit there with a single light on and a butterfly net

Rusty will like them once he realises how tasty they are  Boris gets wound up when they land on the glass, he tries to get them  It's really funny when he's had some bugs, he gets a taste for it and starts patrolling around the top looking for them

I couldn't touch a spider - blerrgh  Have got quite good at catching moths etc though by hand. My cats sometimes try and help but are more of a hindrance

Its one of the things I love about Juwel tanks, you can just lift the flaps or completely remove them and slide the light bar back, makes tank maintenance so easy. I dread saturdays when I have to do wc in my first tank, its one in an oak cabinate and the lid is solid and really heavy the light is attached to that so once the lid is up the tank is darkish.

ooops  that didnt work I ended up copying every message!!! sorryyy

I know what you mean, my little Fluval Roma 125 is the same, I can remove the flaps and slide the light unit to the back. My seabray is a git though, I can balance the heavy wooden lid with tubes attached on it's side against the wall but it is far from stable
