The deal on the fishtank is too good to pass up, not the nappy old sofa that is being replaced by it.

For all the bad luck that seems to come my way, once in awhile I stumble across something really cool, like a humoungous (to me) fishtank with stand, filter, hood, and everything for 75 dollars. I was talking to the new guy at work, telling him about my animals, and when I got to the fish, he asked me if I would want a big fish tank. I said OF COURSE! He said that it is either 55 or 95 gallons (he forgot which) and that his sister got it years ago, meaning to set it up, but never got around to it, so now she just wants it out of her house.

I talked to my dad, and he says that although he dosen't think I need such a big fishtank, we also don't need 3 couches in the living room, and that a fishtank would collect less dog dander than a couch (he has allergies, so dog dander is a big deal), so replacing a couch with the fishtank would be a good thing, so I get to replace a couch with a giant (to me, anyway) fishtank!

Now, with my near distant future plans in limbo (college- am I moving away, or not?), I may or may not get to put fish in it anytime soon, but if anything, it will make a lovely rock garden until I have my own place and can put a beautifully ginormous oscar in it (or dozens of female bettas).

He showed me pics of it today, and it comes with the stand, hood, lights, filter, rocks (which I won't use, actually...) and everything, never been used. Even if I don't get to put fish in it for howevermany years, for 75 dollars, I can't pass it up.

For those of you who think "that silly girl should be saving up for college!", well, if and/or when I am hard up for money, I can sell the tank and everything for 100, and I will have made 25 dollars, so there.

And to think, I got my over 'larger' tank for free (the 26 gallon I was given by a random guy my dad met). (More to that story, but its long.)

Anyway, I need to know if a 55 (or 95) US gallon tank will go crashing through the floor of an old mobile home. I also need to know what to do with the old sofa that is being misplaced.
Maybe I will lok up freecycle, or something.

will you go crashing through it?

a 55g is around 500lbs spread over 4 feet. which is 125lbs per foot. when a person stands, its equal to one foot so thats around 200lbs+ over one foot.
so a human standing on the floor weighs more than a 55g. probably the same for a 95g.

It probably wont, and if you are still worried about that, you just need to get a 4 squares of like 3/4 inch plywood and put them under every foot to spread the weight out. When you start getting into the 90+ gallons, thats when you need to start worrying.

Thanks both. I haven't yet gone crashing through the floor, so perhaps we are ok. I really want to know how big the tank actually is, but the guy hasen't gotten measurements for me yet, and if I bug him too much, he might see how much I want the tank and raise the price, lol!
