If you are looking to adopt an unwanted betta, a good place to start is your local craigslist. There's always a few people who bought a betta vase and can't understand why their fish is swimming sideways. Bettas are so disposable these days that lots of people put 'em up as soon as their little Johnny realises he has been sidetracked and starts begging for a puppy again.
Also, you can sometimes rescue sick bettas for free at places like petco. The management may surrender them to you is you bring the betta to them, list its health problems and state that you are willing to adopt him and treat him but refuse to pay full price. They may mark him down or give him for free. Whatever you do, never pay full price for a sick betta... sympathy is just another one of their marketing ploys!
