Just wondering if anyone's tried making your own fish food? I had a go this weekend used a fish based recipe i'll tell you one thing my fish are all loving it! A bit of fun plus saved a packet on the amount of food I managed to make compared to to it cost

I have been tempted to give it a go,
but some of the recipes i found had some quite pricey ingredients, what recipe did you follow?
i was also worried diy food would break up quickly and make a mess of the tank.
how was it for you?

I made up my recipie, had a look at what goes into a pack of flake food and loosely followed that. I can give you my recipie if you want.

I used some corn flour to bind the food then dried it in the oven. Doesn't break up straight away not until it soaks and the fish pick at it like most pellet food

Mushed/shelled part cooked peas, part cooked broccoli, part cooked green beans and a touch of garlic - all blended together and frozen into cubes in an old frozen blood worm tray.

I give some once a week usually defrosted in a little tank water with blood worm thrown in for good measure...the blood worm goes first but the rest soon follows - much like the order my son eats his dinners in :)

The filter is definitely turned off before I feed this to my fish........I keep meaning to get some gelatine because adding that too apparently helps, holding it together and letting it sink without going into lots and lots of little pieces.

I've read that some people have also blended into the usual seafood such as prawns and fish, and even used water thin ham too...

I used some cheap white fish £3 for 5 fillets from iceland, a bag of frozen peas, a couple of cloves of garlic, 2 multivitamin tablets, some oil then blended all together. Dried in the oven when i cooked my dinner! now rock solid like shop bought pellets! :good:

Next time o go to the butchers i'm going to try getting hold of some heart, kidney, liver, something like that and try the same but on a little smaller scale just to try it out..

O yeah i missed out the cucumber

Cool...I'll have to try that...didn't think to cook, just froze things so far...and the multi-vit's are a great idea too...

Gotta go with garlic though :) Good for the fishies immune systems

you feed your son bloodworm and blended veg? I hope that's only when he's naughty! Cichlid pellets are much tastier, give him those if you want to treat him.
