What in gods name... you say your betta coughed this up? Have you noticed any missing fish recently? One of my angels once ate a good chunk of a dead fish that wasn't removed till I got home from work. He spit out a thick, whitish mass as I had to "snatch" the piece from his mouth as it was too big for him to swallow.

Is your betta lethargic? Losing color, tattered fins, swollen belly or thin? Heavy breathing, fins clamped and unresponsive? I've never heard of a betta doing this!

That looks like old, fungused fish food to me.

I'd advise doing a large water change and tank clean, followed by a reduction in food, and see if it happens again.

Can you tell us about the tank? Is that the tank your betta is in? If so I think you may have other problems too because that looks like a guppy and a couple of neons in the background?
