I just bought a pair today, I couldn't resist, they are so cool! B)

I have them in a 100 gallon tank, they look so tiny. :)

They look so beautiful when the light hits them just right, it's obvious why they are called "sparkling gouramis". I had a thought, though. When my pair of Pearl Gouramis get bigger, will they see the Sparklers as a food source?

No, you won't have problems. I have never had a pearl gourami eat any small fish (well except fry :p) and sparkling gouramies aren't realy THAT small. Plus they are quick when they want to be ;).

I have a species tank with 8 adult sparkling gouramis, and currently 6 fry. They are top little fish, quite feisty and very territorial. I've found they breed quite readily, and the fry don't seem to require a lot of special care. It's fun when I'm sitting at my PC late at night to hear them let out a warning croak every now and then.

I didn't do anything in particular :)

I transferred the 5 adults I had from a community tank into a 40 litre species tank, with lots of cover from live and fake plants, rocks etc so there are plenty of hiding places to establish territories. I introduced 3 new fish (juvies) at the same time. (I figured with 8 of them, the chances were good I'd have both sexes!)

I'm still not sure who the female was, as the spawning happened overnight. The males build their small bubblenests on the underside of a leaf, and guard it until the eggs hatch. I noticed that the spawning occured straight after a water change -- apparently this is quite common with both T. pumilus and T. vittatus (I also have a T. vittatus pair in a larger community tank, but no action from them at all). Also, the weather was quite hot.

The fry were very tiny, dispersed into the elodea within a couple of days, then disappeared. As they were still in the main tank, I assumed they'd been eaten, so stopped feeding with microfood after about 5 days when I couldn't see any fry any more. Over a week later I noticed there were still 3 fry lurking, so I started feeding microfood again, then BBS. There are actually 6 survivors, who are growing well -- they're about 1cm long now, at just over 1 month old.

I haven't checked water params for a while, but the pH is generally around 7.6, and I do weekly 30% water changes, with 1 teasp salt per 5 litres, and blackwater extract.
