this happened to me twice in a month, well the last 2 spawns ive done, but this time round its just amazing to see it happen, ive got a blue marble that spawned with a maroon girl and he as usual tenders to the nest very well considering he is only a youngster himself, they were laid yesturday and there was quite a few of them , today i go into to check on the progress and the little devil had a massive belly couldnt swim to well and obviously at the time seemed to have stuffed himself silly with the eggs and resulting in possible consipation and swimbladder, this really annoyed me as blamed myself for some reason unknown. A few hours later he was still fat and the nest had by this time completley vanished due to him leaving it alone for a while, spent the time in the shop but quickly went checking on him in case he had trouble surfacing b/c if his prob with being bloated, this lasted for about an hour and finally had the time to give him a good water change since their were no eggs left and to my surprise the devil had built another nest and dropping from the nest were newly hatched fry, they werent there before, nor were they anywhere in the tank as I looked like a crazy nutter, they were defo in his pouch, he had held onto them for the final hours until they hatched and managed to build another nest to support them in as well.

just wondered if anyone else has had this happen to them at all? and very interested to hear about it.

Maybe some of the splendens that we have still have some genes that create a mouth pouch, I mean to say there are betta's that mouthbrood so why not splendens with this sort of inheritance ?

wow!, your so lucky, can't say ive experienced it...

thats a very good point, this could well be the fact, wish i had taken a pic at the time as it wouldve been possible to compare that with a mouthbrooder but at the time just thought he had eaten them all. the other betta who did this didnt have such a large lump created from these eggs that he was holding and it was obvious after watching that he was indeed mouthbrooding them, the pouch is possible i suppose but then it also goes into the actual behaviour to care from them in what would be an unconvential way for a splenden, the male is from bettawen so will ask her how far down the line his history can be confirmed regarding the genetics and she pretty hot on knowing her betta history.

Perhaps most of the eggs were fungusy or infertile? So to protect the good ones, he kept them apart? That would exaplin him eating them aswell.
i understand what you mean but his natural way of caring for the ferlile eggs would be to eat the ones that werent or fungus'd and then rinse the fertile eggs and place them back in the nest in a matter of minutes, could be he decided to take his time and when he he could be bothered to put them back the nest had gone so he had no choice but to hold on to them and it just so happened that they were close to hatching so hatched in his mouth

well i was more annoyed that he had eaten them as it wasnt really a planned spawn but want to make the most of his good fathering skills and only had the 1 female ready for him, it wouldnt have been my first choice of a female for him but then afterwards after actually thinking about the possible colouration and patterns on the pending fry it was a blessing and a hope that i could get a very interesting look to work further with since he has very unsual marking on his tail, anyway yes it really shocked me to see them falling from a new nest, felt like i had been dreaming the eating bit, nice though as his last spawn vanished out of thin air the day before and not a corpse in sight , its starting to sound like the twilight zone on this thread :hyper:
