I got some Argos play sand as recommended by a few people on here, I've spent all of this afternoon cleaning it until the water is clear. I've now put it into the tank and started to fill the tank up with water and the water is going really murky. Did this happen to anyone else? Will it settle or do I need to bin the lot of it and buy proper aquarium sand?

Hi,

I have playsand in all of my tanks. It should settle in a few hours :) A trick I used to stop the sand swishing about when putting the water in was to put something that floats in the tank(I used a plastic tray) and poured the water on that so that it didn't disturb the sand too much.

I use argos playsand. If you wash it really well the water shouldn't be murky. Mine didnt have to 'settle', i just poured it in the aquarium. No problems.

:good:

Edit: Nice plecs, Iym. ;)

Thanks guys, I wasn't happy with it at all. So I've taken it all out and I'm going out tomorrow to buy proper aquarium sand.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Lym. Aquarium sand does exactly the same thing.

It's just a case of letting it settle. I'd be surprised if it takes more than a day or two.

Getting aquarium sand wont solve the problem and you will have wasted your cash.

I advise you to have a re-think and stick with your playsand. It'll be just fine. :good:

I have aquarium sand in my current tank and it's a lot better than the play sand I got. Thanks for the advice but I'm going to be buying the same aquarium sand that I already have as I'm happy with that :)
