I've ~almost~ talked my honey into letting me get a little tank so i can have a betta again, since i stupidly gave my little Eclipse3 to our roommate. I'm thinking of getting the All-Glass 7 gallon bowfront, and either keeping a single betta and a few pygmy cories, or dividing the tank and keeping 2 bettas. However, i would have to special order the tank so i'm not sure if dividing it is a reasonable idea. It needs to look pretty good, it will be in the living room. I notice that it is a kit that comes with a whisper power filter, i've never used those. Can i pack it with my own media (in my case i want to use some of the substrat pro which is cultured in my canister)? I was considering getting 2 small internal filters if i divide the tank, if i don't divide it i might get the smallest Eheim aquaball. Any comments?

which model of whisper as some allow for additional media and others have just a cartridge that contains foam with carbon sealed inside in little compartments. :)

I dunno, it just says "Whisper power filter", that's all the info i have and since i have to special order the tank i won't know unless i can find one in a store and examine the filter.

this is probably the one you will get for a tank that size. you should be able to do what you are trying with this. Sometimes the motors on the whispers are an issue but i think that it usually affects the larger filters(20+ gals). HTH :)

I have a whisper PF 10i filter in my small tank. It also came with the tank. Here is a link to it: http://www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/product.aspx?id=280. The proposed media is a bio bag (foam) that can be filled with carbon that slides into the center of the filter. I use the bio bag for my small tank as it does a fine job of filtration. I have never used anything else with it, but it may be able to be done. The issue would be keeping the media from popping out of the top as there is no lid.

I do put a sponge under the bottom as the intake area is large, relatively speaking, and one of my bettas who was sick got sucked up against it and couldn't get free. I haven't had any issues with the motor.

Maybe you can find out from the company you are thinking about ordering from which model comes with the 7 gallon tank. The filter I have is relatively inexpensive so if you choose to get the tank and the PF 10i is the one they include with it, you may want to just get a different filter for it and either keep the whisper as a back up or sell it.

HTH a bit!
