Hi all,

I went to my LFS yesterday, because Monday is the day they get all their new fish up for sale. :hey: Anyway, they recently started stocking Wild Bettas so I went to see what they had. They had Betta Coccina but I already have a pair of those, and they just got in Betta akarensis. I was tempted to get some of those, but the size kind of put me off.. :(

Anyway, on to my question. I asked one of the employees if they had any other wild Bettas, and he said no but that they were getting in some new ones today. I asked what they were and he said "Firefly Bettas". He didn't know which species. So I was just wondering if any of you guys had heard any Wild Betta Species being called Firefly Bettas? I'd love to get some more Wild Bettas, but I like knowing what I'm getting into!

Any info or thoughts would be great. :D

I checked the IBC species list, but nothing was mentioned as having that common name :dunno:

I have Googled like crazy, and all I can find are bettas whos owners have named them Firefly. However in all the cases I found except one, they have very red fins. The fins of the exception were white with a bit of red.

So maybe it's a slang term for wild bettas who have lots of red on their fins? That's a complete and total guess right there. I really don't know :dunno:

I'm very eager to see what fish they bring in under that name! :D

So after trying to find something on this myself, I started thinking… perhaps the pet store employee was told they were getting in butterfly bettas, and not knowing much about them just brushed the conversation off. In you walk asking about bettas, now he’s trying desperately to remember the conversation he had… they were getting bettas, it was some sort of bug, a pretty one… hmm…. Firefly? Yeah that’s sounds good, were getting firefly bettas in.

But who knows what it was he really meant.

I found this link. that lists "Firefly Betta" as a nickname for BETTA Dimidiata.

Hmmm...

Question, what is the betta displayed in the BETTA Sp Burdigala "Purple moon Betta", cause I have a female that looks exactly like that and it puzzled me. It would be nice to identify her properly ? :/

Thanks for the replies. :D

I'd think that was possible if it was any other fish store, but the people here are really good. They stock lots of Bettas, and most can tell you all the color types they are (Okay, I admit it...I quiz them just to see sometimes :*) ) so I'm pretty sure he knew the difference between the Wilds and the Splendens. It's a good thought though. :)

Ooooh, you're right! Thanks so much! :D

Oh! If it’s true those are really neat looking!! http://ibc-smp.org/species/dimidiata.html

Wow...I like those a lot. And they stay pretty small...they may be just the thing for my 10 gallon I've been wanting to stock with Wilds. :shifty:

Anyway, thanks so much guys! You've all been a big help.

If they do turn out to be dimidiata, get them. A few people are workign with them, but not in great numbers yet, so they're not the most common species in the trade yet. Keep us posted.

Yeah, I'll definitely get them if they are. :)

They'll probably be on quarantine for a while, but I'm going to go up and see them this weekend. Just to see what they are. I will keep you all updated! :D
