just bought 6 the other day very cheaply as my tanks far to small for a goldfish every site i read has different details on them including our very own fish index so how do you keep yours?

at the moment ive got 6 (yuoung ones) in a 2 gallon tank and they seem fine, i suppose in the long run there going to need a bigger tank?

and temperature wise ive read they can live in temperatures as low as 8C(46F), my tank sits at 17C(62F) im wondering whether to buy a small heater just so the temperature remains constant?

final queery (that i can think of) current from the filter is rather strong and they do thier best to avoid it, should its allready got a slate infront of it thus restricting the currents to one side of the tank, should i try and buy some sort of spray bar to restrict this all together?

many thanks on any sujestions opinons or advice, Sam

Your tank is miles too small for a goldfish. Just one goldfish needs around 20 US gallons even 15 with over filtering and regular large water changes is pushing it. You have bought far too many fish for your tank. WCMs reach around 1 to 1 and a half inches each so your "tank" has room for 1 maybe 2 tops. They are much happier in larger groups of 8+ and also need a fair amount of swimming space which your tank can't give them. To be honest 2 gallons is not big enough to keep any fish at all. Fish shops sell them and say theyre big enough and in the early stages when your fish are young and small they are OK. They soon outgrow a tiny tank like that though. If youre serious about fish keeping then get rid of that tiny tank and get an absolute minimum 10 gallon. 30 gallons is an ideal beginner tank size IMO though. If you keep things as they are then you are pretty much guaranteed to have problems as your fish will become stressed because there's too many for that tank and your water quality will go down hill very quickly leading to deaths.

Read all the pinned topics at the top of this forum and seriously consider the tank upgrade if you want to continue with this great hobby.

Good luck

okay thanks

was looking in the lfs at a record 96.........unfortunatly it had no price on it and there was no one around at the time to ask ill have a look round for a bigger tank

While you're shopping, think about subtropical fish. Your white clouds will be happiest at around 18 C rather than at the ~25 C most tropicals like. At subtropical temperatures, there are a bunch of really cool fish out there that are often overlooked. For example:
  • Rosy barb, Barbus conchonius
  • Golden dwarf barb, Barbus gelius
  • Dwarf mosquitofish, Heterandria formosa
  • Variatus platy, Xiphophorus variatus
  • Spanish killifish, Aphanius iberus
  • Hong Kong plec, Gastromyzon punctulatus
  • Dragon goby, Rhinogobius duospilus
There are plenty more. Most of the fish from China are subtropical, as are the tetras and other characins from South America below the Amazon. There are obviously some European and North American fish that fit this category, too, like sunfish, but you don't tend to see them traded much.

Cheers,

Neale

Have you tried talking to local fish enthusiasts ?

I was talking to my old boss (who now sub-contracts to me!) who has several tanks in his house. I mentioned, over a coffee, that I was looking to upgrade from my 24x12x12 tank, and he said he had several 36x15x12 sitting spare! Even though I offered money, he still gave the tank free, including hood and light.

You may also be able to pick one up cheaply from the local free ads.
