Hi, im now ready to start cycleing my 32UK gallon tank, but im still undecided of what to put in it...
So im thinking about a pair.
I need one thats easy to breed, and can EITHER:

-Have tankmates that will eat the fry/eggs, so that i can control the ammont of young that surrvive with a breeding trap or sectioned off area etc.

-Are highly desireable, so that i can sell the young easily, but are still easy to breed.

Firstly i thought about convicts, but it seems that you can get them anywhere and in my size tank, you couldnt have any tankmates to eat fry because of their aggression...

Thanks, Mikey

Cryptoheros sajica dude, the Tbar cichlid. Awesome fish. Cousins of the convicts, but you can keep plants with them, they dont breed as quick/easily as convicts, the arent as aggro and they look stunning.

Yeah ive seen them before, nice fish.
How big do they get?
How many could i have?
Are they demanding?
Any tankmates?

Thanks :good:

Males can get to 6 inches with great humps on their heads and long fins. Females smaller, about 4.5-5 inches. A pair for every 2ft of tank length. No special needs and you can have tank mates like catfish, and anything that is roughly 4 inches long. When not breeding they are quite the community fish. Barbs are a good idea.

Allright cool, sound like ace fish, and i do like the look of them.
What type of stocking would you surrgest, if i had a pair of them in the tank?

MIkey

Ok, so male and female Tbar cichlid, (suggest buying 6 young ones and then wait to see the more dominant pair that pair up) um... some sort of plec, and catfish(es) that dont get huge so upsidedown syno and 6-7 danios or barbs (ive got 6 tiger barbs with mine).

Ok, that sounds good, but could i go for the pair and then maybe some other largeish cichlids, like maybe firemouths or cons or keyholes etc.?

Mikey

Depends on how long the tank is. each pair needs 2ft of tank length each. So i guess you'd have to have a 48" tank (4ft). Firemouths would be the better cichlid to have with them as convict can cross breed and keyholes in my opinion are very peaceful and wouldnt stand a chance when the sajicas breed.

Nope my tank isnt very long, but more tall, its 81cm long....

Mikey

:/ Oh
So one pair of cichlids. I suppose you could keep a single cichlid with them, like......... a big firemouth. Not sure though. To get the best out of your tank you might have to rethink what you really want. African cichlids are cool, you could have quite a few and they'll breed. Ask in the African cichlid section for more info as i dont know that mcuh on them.

Could i have a con pair and a firemouth or a con pair and a firemouth?

yes ive asked in the african section, and Mbuna would actually be perfect, as i have loads of rocks, like lava, slate, and elephant skin rock from South Africa....but at all my LFS's the Mbuna are just marked "mixed malawi"...

MIkey

Con pair and a firemouth? Firemouth would most certainly get battered. Sajica pair and firemouth? He might stand a chance aspecially if hes bigger. A firemouth pair and con or sajica would be fine.

Ok, id love that, but how easy are firemouths to breed?

Mikey

Quiet easy. medium hard water and up, ph 7 and up, a pair (female and male that like each other) and caves. Provide a flat rock too.

Allright then, ill set-up the tank, and ill try and get hold of some, thanks alot :good:
