I'm not sure why over the past month or so but I've noticed that I haven't been sticking to my weekly water changes as usual. Does this happen to the "regular" water changers once in a while?

Well, we all feel a little lazy once in a while i guess. But as long as you don't miss too many, and you don't overfeed, and dont overstock, you should be fine. That's why i occasionally 'forget' a water change :p

you should especially do those water changes if you have a clown plec in a 7 gal :sly:

i do mine all the time, every 3rd or fourth day is my shedule

A question I'm asking myself is,'how often would the substrate need to be cleaned?', if the overall water quality is fine?

i would suppose if the water is ok, so would the substrate. The two are probably related, in the sense of fish waste, but i suppose bacteria might build up if you don't agitate the sand or have something that does agitate the sand.

Yes Iam a lazy water changer and have been so for 18 years.

Um once a month :*)

However I guess i am lucky having densley planted aquariums and very low nitate reading.

I guess it is down to experiance and larger aquariums are much more stable.

Ofc if I were keeping large fish or sensitve types like Discus you definatley have to be more active on the waterchanging front.

To think..im contemplating a mbuna setup !!!

I do mine every two weeks to three weeks but I have well established tanks with low waste producing fish so I can get away with it.

I have 3 tanks to do every week, sometimes you don't feel like it, but it has to be done, I just think of the fish and that makes me do it.

Iv got 3 tanks too. I find when I do it every week its easier to remember when I last did one. When I used to only do it every couple weeks I could never remember did I do one last week, or was it the week before. I ended up missing too many and developed problemos. So now its every week unless for some incredable circumstance.

I think lots of water changes are good. I change mine once a week - on Sunday to be exact... If you aren't careful, your tank can develop what is known as 'old tank syndrome' and that can't possibly be a good thing.

Well i'm just about to start a new thread on the pics forum, cause I've come home tonight to find i've got something white stuck on the glass!!! Looks like fungus, I've never heard of old tank syndrome, and was concerned becuase I only do water changes every 3 weeks. Have a look at the pics in a bit if you could as I would be interested to see what you think.

Cheers

Steph
