Hi all

Had a bizarre conversation with a friend today (seriously it is a friend - this isn't me talking about me) and he feeds ants to his fish by simply throwing them in the tank and using them effectively as live food. He accepts that this is cruel to ants (or at least a bit unfair on them), but my question is whether this is particularly good for the fish? Is it? is there anything wrong with this other than the ethics of catching ants and offering them up as live bait

Interested in your thoughts

The only problem that I can see with adding ants to your fish's diet is if someone has been spraying poison that the ants now carry with them to the fish. Otherwise it is not such a bad food in my opinion. Fish eat random insects that fall into their water whenever they can get hold of them and I see no reason not to have ants on the menu. Actually, I throw any ants that try to come near my tank into the big community tank where the more carnivorous among them have taken to getting all excited when my hand moves toward the tank surface.
