Hi all.

Apologies if this q has been asked before but... I am considering buying a UV steriliser as I've had a disaster recently. Not confirmed as a bacteriological problem but I'm getting paranoid. I've 2 tanks and it's the larger of the two that I'm worried about. It's a Juwel Rekord 120.

I was thinking of buying a 9w Fish r Fun internal steriliser.

Yeah, I know, the name alone puts me off but do they work? I think that this is the same unit as THIS (just re-marketed in the uk with the FRF brand, but I'm not 100%.) If it is, then this particular unit has been recommended. It's just that name 'Fish r Fun'... Sorry, but to me it just seems to sum up those cheap and cheerful tanks that must kill hundereds of fish per year (only my opinion!)

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

DB.

From this thread over in the planted section :

Hi,

Im using a 9W internal UV steriliser (with powerhead) = UV Steriliser = The link show a fairly good pic of the unit. It is attached to the inside of the tank using suckers on the back of the powerhead unit.
Had it running for about 3 weeks now and seems to be going well .... water looks crystal clear.

I bought mine in the UK here = Lifeforceonline = I'm sure there are better UV units out there ... but for the money I have no complaints !

I'm sure they must be available in Canada/US

Hi doc, thats exactly the ones that i have. They are badged under fish r fun but manufactured by aa-aquarium ( thats the website on the packaging).

they are an absolute DODDLE to install and set up. Infact its just a case of connect the U pipe to the lamp unit, stick the power head on the other end and connect the colour coded cables and away you go. They dont spew loads of water out like an internal filter either, so if you have any current sensative fish theres nothing to worry about. How much you paying for it? i gave £19.99 for mine, and i got the 24w one as well for £39.99

Hi Sp00ky, Thanks for the info. I did wonder what the output current would be like, but sounds like it'll be OK as long as it doesn't sound like a jet plane when it's working! (NOTE TO ANY WHO CARE; I bought an Ario Color 4 internal airpump/fancy light and it's rubbish. The noise it makes is truly unbelievable. Thankfully got a full refund on that.)

I've gone for the 9w one as I think it's sufficient for my 120l tank. I'm paying around the same price, although I had a little trouble tracking one down, but I've nailed it now!

I'm sure the unit's fine. It's just that name; Fish 'R' Fun

Thanks again,

DB

no probs mate. Its definately very quiet. However, i also have a fluval 4+ in the tank and a fluval 304 so i wouldnt really be able to hear it LOL, but my bigger one is very quiet.

have fun with it, and you will notice the clarity of the water in next to no time !

Hi Spooky. Could you tell me how long the units are ? (the two you have ?)

Thanks :)

I am thinking of getting the 24 watt one for my 55 US gallon tank - and would like to know the sizes also. I heard that the 24 watt one was about 18 inches long, but if someone could post up the size to verify, that would be great! I found the 24 watt one for $70 US dollars shipped.

 that's ginormous !
What about the 9Watt ?

the vectron15 is only about 10-12" long

i havent seen the nine watt, yet,

I`m after a vectron uv2 24w, (two of them acctualy when i get the fluval running in tandom with my reena xp2 [i have big plans for this tank in the future])

hiya
just thought i would say that i also have the fish r fun uv, i've the 24watt. i've got it in my 4 foot tank & althou you can see it, its not in ya face either. where the uv is i think its quite slim. in fact my fluval 2+ filter is wider :D
i only got mine as i was having a major algea bloom that no amount of water changes were shifting, had it plugged in about a week & the water was very clear. its now unplugged & has been for a while now & i've not had any return of the algea.
hth :D :D

thats a lot of UV.....our tank is big and we haver no problems with the Vectron15, In the tank we have its more for a belt and braces approach really and because of the set up we have a lot of filtration on the tank. What would you see needing that much UV Ian?

its to cope with the flow rates, the rena and fluval pump out aprximately 250 gph and the 15w vectron is only rated up to aprox 150

i e-mailed TMC them selves asking what they would recomend for the setup i have planned and thats what they came up with, it was either that or have one filter with the uv one without. but why the hell not go for over kill eh?
