It's day 4 of the new setup, first time I've tested the water, I borrowed some one else's HOB filter from an established tank and also took a couple of their plants and a little bit of gravel + an ornament and a bit of drift wood.

My fluval 305 is brand new.

I tested the water today and this is the results.

PH -= 8.0 (how it comes out the tap)
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0.1
Nitrate = 110

Does everything look normal?

With a mature filter already on the tank, I would say it's normal for this part of the cycle (assuming your fish-in cycling). Nitrite wants to fall to zero, and stay there, before removing the HOB, and again waiting for ammonia and nitrite to return to zero, before adding more fish(assuming the HOB is a temp thing). Do you have any fish in there, as if so how many? If you have no fish in there, I would look at [topic="113861"]this thread[/topic] For your next steap in the process. If you have fish, look at [topic="224306"]this thread[/topic] for the next steap in the process.

P.S. I assume you know not to rinse filter media under the tap? This is a common mistake, that puts the whole process of cycling the tank back to square one. Instead, use water from the tank for cleaning :good:

So a case of adding some ammonia and seeing if it gets cleared, will try tomorrow.

Cheers

Do you have fish in the tank? Adding ammonia with fish in, is a very bad idea :crazy: You would only ever itroduce ammonia to a tank, if there are no fish in there, and you are attempting a fishless cycle :good: If you have fish in, the second link in my above post is the one that is relivant. The ammonia and ntirite are to vanish before adding more fish.

Sorry if I wasn't clear earlier

If fishless cycling, 110 nitrates is perfectly normal. The first link is the one you want :good: Some more mature media is in order, as the bactiria on the old lot will have died off. If you dont want to ask your friend, add a post in [topic="150631"]this topic[/topic] asking members for some media :good:

Sorry for my stupidity this morning :blush:
