Ok, I have been posting so many questions lately and I do apologize for that.

Anyways, currently I have a 10 gallon lightly planted tank with 1 female betta and 2 African Dwarf Frogs. They get along great and all three of them are well fed and seem happy.

I wanted to get 6 pygmy cories to go in there with them. But I have been thinking that if I get a school of fish I am likely to get at least one male or one female and may end up with fry, which I really don't want.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about what else I could put in my tank? (I know a lot of people say that it comes down to the individual betta in terms of tank mates, but I would say my betta is fairly laid back and isn't aggressive.) If there are any other fish that would be able to be alone or in pairs that you can easily identify the sex of, I would probably want to go with one of them.

So ya, any ideas are wanted :) Thanks!

It would be unlikely that the Cories would breed in the tank, and if they did it would be unlikely you would realise any fry and been born as unless bred in larger tanks or specific breeding tanks the other adults will often eat the eggs and/or fry before you get chance to do anything.

As for other singular fish, nothing springs to mind as the only options would be a threat to the Betta. You could look at a school of micro fish, such as Galaxy Rasbora, Chilli Rasbora, Ember Tetras or Green Neon Tetras.

Ok, I'll look at those species and I'll do some more research on my own. Thanks

Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be another fish, I would just like some more "life" in my tank.

Anyone have any idea if a couple platys would be alright in here? Probably all male.

Platys are not good in a ten gallon. 15-20 is their minimum, plus they can be rather bossy.

Oh! Good to know! Thanks Atticus

I feel so conflicted about what I want in the tank. While I really love what pygmy cories look like, and I had my heart set on them for the longest time I think that adding 6 of them will make the tank look too crowded...would it be so bad if I bought 3 of them (like I would need to, to get the bacteria building up in my tank) and see if they do ok as a group of 3? If they seem absolutely unhappy I can either see if I can bring them back or bite the bullet and just get 3 more. I found a few posts on other fish websites saying that people have successfully kept cories in pairs and had no ill effects. But I know it probably also comes down to the individual fish.

lol I feel like this post has turned into me asking permission to get fish. Let me know your opinions.

I wouldnt personally, pygmy cories actually do much better in big groups of 10+ people sometimes keep cories in pairs or trios when they are rare species and getting more is near impossible. But I would never recommend a trio of them.

That's the answer I was expecting. I'll keep up my search. I would love a pair of guppies but I know that would be really risky with my betta.

Sounds like you need a second tank.

You know as stupid as this is going to sound, I kind of forgot I could do that xD Maybe I'll get myself one as a birthday present later this year. I think you just solved my whole problem. Thanks :)

And as for my current tank, I think I'll look into getting a snail that stays small and that'll be it.

I've got MTS terribly. I have three running tanks (plus a hospital and fry tank), but I really want to start on my 100 gallon build now. Unfortunately that requires money and a fairly stable home environment. If you got a 20 gallon, you could keep a decent sized group of male guppies (I like endlers better, but I have two guppies now that I'm find of), a school of tetras, and a school of corys. Albinos are my favorites.

Wow a 100 gallon tank would be amazing! And the stocking you suggested sounds like it would be a pretty awesome tank :D

For the schooling species, I would keep a smaller fish, perhaps glowlight tetras or something similar, and maybe some panda corys. You could also just as well have about ten or so Pygmy corys. Do it and post pictures and you'll be happy forever. :D

I would go even smaller than the Glowlights, with the micro fish I mentioned above, its a great chance to get a good sized school. Ember Tetras and Green Neon Tetras or Galaxy Rasboras are all nice :)
