ok the filter lingo confuses the hell out of me

given my tank is roughly 196 litres (bout 55 gallons) how much out put should i have? I mean is 450L/hour good or do i need more? lol thanks in advance

When I look at filters I usually try to go with at least twice as much output as the size of tank i have. So for a 55gallon tank you will want at least 110gph. Anything higher then that would be awesome!!!! :good: :good: :good:

I'll add in that most of my tanks are filtered at least 3-4 times their size in an hour.

It really depends on the kind of fish you have and how many. If you have messy fish and/or fully stocked I would recommend 4-5 times the tank volume an hour. Your sitting at about 2 times the tank volume an hour. In any case though the more the better.

being as the tank is quite long would having two of these filters work? I mean would I get the right sort of turn over? I found a really good hangover filter on sale, and i THOUGHT that it would be enough, however if it's not then buying two for one at each end would be next thing. I haven't bought it yet, im just sitting here weighing up the options. Thanks :)not sure as to what sort of fish i'm wanting, so many but alot don't go together in community tanks. So ..... basically im just finding bits n pieces as i go along to go into the tank for after i move...YAY NOT LONG NOW having an empty tank is killing me! I just wanna sling some water in it just to keep it from being empty.....but im taking this time to sorta look around and find out what would be best for this particular tank...cheers ya'll :D keep it coming :)

ok so theoretically speaking i'd have about 900l/hr going in that tank, is it right on the money for that size or slightly over/under filtered?

That would be right on the money. Also providing you the opportunity for a well stocked tank. May I ask what kind of filter these are, if you know?

15% OFF!!! Buy the 502 Hang On Filter at our Summer Sale price of £8.89!

This clever and discrete filter hangs on the rim and rests at the back of your aquarium, eliminating the sight of the filter box within your aquarium habitat. Water is sucked in and filtered via a versatile filtration compartment then overflowed back into your aquarium like a waterfall. This also gives a great surface movement. Suitable for aquariums up to 50L

Frequency: 50HZ/60HZ.
Voltage: AC240V
Watt: 5W consumption
Max output: 450L/HR

1 year manufacturers warranty

probably not the best of choices, according to most of the more fish frenzied folks here, but if you don't try them for yourself then ya never know if they're any good for someone on a budget :)

BOLLOX!!! i just read that bit 'upto 50 litres' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! back to the drawing board lol

5-6 x turnover per hour is moderate, 10x turnover per hour is optimal. You cannot over filter a tank! (But you can over current) The larger the tank gets obviously the harder it is to achieve this, but I like to think that most larger tanks tend to be understocked more often than smaller tanks.

I like using two filters for multiple reasons:
1) Always have a back-up filter if one breaks
2) Can transfer one filter to another tank for fast cycling
3) Can alternate cleanings to avoid paranoia of accidental mini-cycles
4) More spare media to pass on to a friend if needed.

I just looked up this filter and I've got to say there is a reason the price is so low. It states that has an output of 450L/hr, Very on likely for this filter especially when full of media and bacteria. The company know this that is why they also state it is recommended for a 50L tank. You would need at least four of these to give you decent filtering capability. I would look into get a different filter if possible.
