Another dumb question

Appart from the one gallon diffrence in a 29 and 30 gallon tank, whats the diffrence? I have herd that a 29 gallon has the same surface area that a 20 has, so does a 30 give it more?

Also would you be able to keep fish that need 30 gallons in a 29? Or does that one gallon make a lot?

The difference is the fish will like that one extra gallon.
