Hello, I'm fairly new to fish keeping and i have a problem, I have added some new fish today and one of my existing mollies keeps chasing and nipping at them. I have put him in a bag for the momment as I don't want the newbies to get their fins nipped.

Existing fish : 5 neon tetras, mollie (male), another fish, butterfly fish, 2 cat fish.

New fish : 2 male goaramis

Are they just marking their turf or is their a good chance that the I will wake up to a goarami with no fins, or even worse dead.

The mollie was once very agressive to a female mollie which we bought at the same time who subsequently died. (this may have been a temperature problem though)

Help would be welcome as what to do. Take mollie back and get something happier or let them mark their turf. ???

What size is the tank? If the tank is too small, the molly might feel stressed.

Can you identify this "other fish" A picture will help. What species of catfish? And butterfly fish and gouramis should not coexist, as they will nip at each other's fin. And the butterfly fish will eventually eat your neon tetras.

Oh No. this sounds like carnage is about to ensue.

Attached is a photo of the other fish, and the 2 cat fish.

That is a bit worrying about the goarmis and the butterfly fish and they actually had them stocked in the same tank.

The tank is a 75 litre, also attached is a photo.

The first, blue fish, is a German Ram, and should be kept in high temperatures which the other fish cannot withstand. I would rehome or return the butterfly fish. The two catfish appear to be common plecs, which will grow massive, and they should be rehomed as well.

So in short:
-Rehome the plecs
-Rehome the butterfly fish
-Rehome the Ram
-And rehome one of the male gouramis, as the tank is too small for two males, and they will become aggressive torwards one another.

You could do:
-Add another female molly, it might calm the male down and he will stop being aggressive and spend more time chasing fishy tail
-Keep one male gourami
-Add more neon tetras. They like to be in groups of 6+, so you could get a good school going.
-As for algae control, you could go for some Amano shrimp.

It's ok, beginners make mistakes all the time, don't feel discouraged! It's good you came here to seek advice, or else your tank might've been a bloody battleground. You could always add more plants, to give the other fish more hiding places when the male molly goes on the attack.

One last question, is the tank cycled?

Not entirely sure what cycled is, though after browsing around the forum its seems to be a popular subject.

The tank has been on the go for probably 12 months now but we had an angel fish we ate everything we had in the tank.
When we eventually figured out what was going on. (angel fish coulsn't eat itself) we returned it to the shop, with an angry word explaining that they told us the angel fish would be fine because we bought it as a young fish.

So the tank is fairly established I would say but all the stock and plants are reasonably new.

DIfferent shop also said the goaramis would be fine with the butterfly fish, its frustrating when the shops don't give you the right advice..

Thanks for your help so far.
