I am upgrading my tank at the weekend from a 3ft to a 6ft, I currently have 3 juvenile Angel fish in my setup and would love to have a large shoal of tetra. I am aware that neons are the nautral food for Angel fish, however given that my tank is going to be large and these Angels are only juveniles, will it be possible?

Your Thoughts

With any fish, the rule of thumb is, if it can fit in their mouth then it will. So if you get your Tetras big or keep them in another tank for say 5 months until they reach a lush size then they can be ok to introduce.

Its intersing you say that, as I have a small male guppy in with my angels at the moment, and i would say he is about the size of the common sized neons you see at LFS and yet my Angels have not even bothered with him

it CAN work, although it is a risk.

You have juvis which is a good start. If you want to try it then place the tetra in the new tank before the angels and give them a few days in there at least prior to adding them. Hopefully the juvi angels will not be able to snack on them due to their size and will then grow up not seeing them as food.

I have 6 angels in with neons and harlequins - never had one snacked on in roughly 12 months.

My angels also grew up with shrimp, otos, harlequins and khulis and haven't touched any of them. The harlequins, now adult, are too big really for them to eat as they are quite deep bodied, so would be a good fish to look at if they do turn out to be snackish.

Might be an expensive meal, adult Cardinals might be ok.

As someone said before, if it will fit in their mouths and the Angels get a chance, thats where they will end up!
I have Angels and Cardinals and have no issues but I know generally Neons are a touch smaller so just use the above as a guide and you will be fine. As you say it is a big tank but you also may see the Neons hiding alot if they are being persued!

I had neons and juvi angels and sure enough when the angels grew big enough (which doesn't take long) the neons were lunch.

Hmmm Mixed expereinces..

May be better to go down the cardinal route for the colour :good:

All you can do is try. Your avatar makes me giggle, and hurts my brain.
