Angelfish is a type of cichlid. I think most cichlids are pretty hardy. So it woould be reasonable to think they would be OK if put into an uncycled tank?

Actually you can keep any fish in an uncycled tank as long as you are willing to do the requisite number of water changes with well matched changing water. The absolute minimum I think one can get away with is about 25% every other day. More may be necessary depending on the tank and fish involved.

Depending on the fish and tank size, it is also possible to set up a new tank for long term use with enough plants to deal with ammonia.

So yes there are ways to get arouind cycling.

But in the vast majority of situations it is a heck of a lot easier and reliable to have cycled tanks for the long term housing of fish

i totally disagree with the above statement and should absolutely not be saying this to anyone as advice!

yes that is all possible, a walstad tank is in effect a heavily planted tank that has no filter but uses the plants as its filter.

still for an angel i dont think its possible as they are not hardy, just today a poster has lost his angel fish after putting it in an uncycled tank.

cycled is best for them

Disagree or not its true. Tap water contains no toxic levels of amonia. Just far easier and better for the fish to Cycle your tank.

u can lose alot of fish in an uncycled tank u cnat gurantee regular water changes will preserve the life of your fish

When medicating ill fish, especially with antibiotics, it is common practice to do large daily water changes. This is because the medication kills off the nitrifying bacteria. You really have no choice, but the water changes do keep ammonia & nitrite down.

The question included "is it reasonable". If it were reasonable all the large public aquariums as well as the best lfs would be doing daily 75% water changes on all their tanks instead of running bio filtration.

The assumption is made that most cichlids are pretty hardy. This many times depends more on the genetic background (proper breeding practices) of the individual fish. In many other cases individual species are quite intolerant of nitrates, ammonia & nitrite are out of the question.

I agree with Tolak( again). I have a hard time keeping angelfish in CYCLED tanks, so no, i would highly discourage putting any fish in a un cycled tank, let alone angelfish.
