would it be possible to go with a lone angelfish in a 33 gal? I don't want to go thru all the trouble of getting 6, and then waiting for 2 to pair up. Would the lone angel be alright, or would it need company?

Also thinking of getting a school of tetras, probably the red finned ones. How many can I keep in there, in additional to the angelfish and 5-6 cories?

Yes, that's fine - as long as the tank is 18" tall. Angels aren't really schooling fish so they do just fine on their own. Cories and tetras are very low waste producers so you could easily get a school of 8-10 tetras. Just make sure and check which ones you're getting and that they're not fin nippers.
