Hey!

I have been doing a lot of research lately about the keeping of angelfish and I've gotten too many different answers to make sense of anything. I'm fairly new to the aquarium hobby and I really hate losing a fish, so if you think there is any chance I would be stressing out the fish please do let me know.

I currently have a 29 gallon tank. It's fairly tall. I would like to keep one angelfish in the future. I know the tank is far too small for any more than one, if even that is possible.

I have heard people say that once they reach a certain size they need to be moved to a larger tank. I was just wondering if this would still apply if it isn't sharing the tank with any other fish.

I would really just like some opinions on whether not one in a 29 would be ok.

Please note
Tank mates will not be an issue as, if I do decide to get one the tank would be empty at the time so I will buy accordingly or keep it empty entirely.

Also,

Feel free to suggest other fish to add if the angel is not an option, I'm open to ideas. Thank you in advance

I've had some experience with Angels and it really depends on the type of angel you go with, angels like to school so it is better to go with two or three of them. Possibly you could go with some juvenile fish until you can upgrade to a bigger tank and then transfer them as they grow. Angel fish tend to be pretty nippy, so I'd either keep them in a tank alone or with same temperament fish. Best of luck!

Haven't had angelfish before but I was looking at them when I upgraded my tank, the general feedback and information out there is that you can either keep them singularly, a proven breeding pair or as a large group of 5/6+. So really your only option would be as a singleton and that's if your tanks big enough and I'm sure someone will guide you on that soon as I'm not 100% sure on minimum tank sizes, all I know is that you'll need something like 18 inches of water from the substrate to the surface.

Hope this helps!

Do you know the tank measurements? Generally 30 gallons is the minimum for an angel, so your tank should be okay if you just keep one, if upgrading to a larger tank in the future is an option for you you could keep 5 or 6 juveniles, and upgrade to a 100 gallon when they get a bit bigger. If you do decide to just keep one, you could also have some sort of peaceful bottom dweller(s) too, I'd recommend a school of cories.
