Hey. I have 2 angelfish in a 30 g tank. I've had them in this tank together for probably 4-5 months. They are both adults ( very large angelfish). But, they have not paired opff. Why is this? I owuld assume that if they were both males, they would fight to the death, correct? And if they were a male/female group, they would have paired off, and if they were female /female, they would be like they are, or fought. So, how can i sex them? I know itsd quite hard, but is there any reliable way? Please help! Pics are Avalible if needed.

The only way you can tell if they are male or female is when they are in breeding mode. There is no other way to do it so I'm geussing they are both female. Try adding a couple more and see if you get a pair.. then remove the others.

The thing is, i cant find ANYWHERE with good quality angelfish. Both the Angels i have were bought from a store that is closed ( opening in a few months again), and they got both shipments from a local breeder. I've boughten angelfish from Petsmart, only to keep returning them since they dont live a week( i found a thing of recipets from petsmart, i had returned 24 different angelfish!). And when i go there, there angels are about the size of quarters ( if your lucky), and severly stressed.

Nope, i dont know many people that keep fish. And if they do, its cold fish in bowls or just a community tank.

I guess you'll just have to wait then and see if you find any angels soon. Have you tried going a bit further out of town to an independent shop rather then a chain. They are more reliable then chains.

Yes, i've been to a independent shop farther out, and one of them i bought 2 angels from, and both died. The other one i havent yet, but is kinda annoying because he tr eats me like a child because im 15 ( people tell me i look like im 12), and last time tried to keep selling me cycling rpoducts, and was surprised enough that i knew so muich that he walked out to our car and was talking to my grandma about me. Then i called one day to ask for advise, and he didnt know anything abotu fish diseases. So, i wasnt very satisfied with the store, but i might, just might go up there to get ahold of a angel or too.

Im not sure if i will. Especially since its a drive's away. I might go next month, because i want to take my batch of guppies up there and try to get some credit. Also, if i added the other angels, my tank would be over stocked. And i want to do a complete tank over haul when i get a job ( applied at Taco Bell, but not heard from them yet).

It isn't always 100% possible that they will pair off even if they are adults, and m/f. Normally you want to buy a big school of Angels, and wait for two to pair off.

^ at that point of time of purchase, i had 2 half blacks. Then, they fought and i took the dominant one to the lfs ( i am thinking they are both male), then i bought the Dalmation one ( my second angelfish now). So, they have been together forever now, no fighting or anything, so i am confused at what sex they are.

Like DL sid there is no garrenty they will pair off even if they are male and female or if they dont feel conditions are rite, again as DL said normally buying a group of say 6 is the norm and hopefully u will have a least 2 that will pair but again not always but a much bigger chance within a group than just a pair :) but if they do pair be prepared 2 get a bigger tank they often have in excess of 100 babies as u probably know and they eat u out of house and home lol :p

What are the tank conditions like? ie: temperature, PH, nitrate
How often do you feed them and what do you feed them?
What other fish are in the tank with them?

Adult male angelfish will often develop a more rounded forehead. This is caused by a build up of fatty tissue. The females usually have a more normal shaped head.
When they are breeding the males have a longer thinner ovipositor (egg laying tube) and the females have a shorter wider one.

As mentioned by others, the fish might not pair up because they simply don't like each other. If they are both females then they will usually try to breed if conditions are good. If they are both males then will probably have the odd biffo but if there aren't any females to fight over then they probably won't do much of that.

Have the temperature on about 28C and keep the nitrates below 30ppm. Feed them 2-4 times a day on meat based and dry foods. Frozen prawn and fish is good for bringing fish into breeding condition. Do daily partial (30-50%) water changes for a week and see if that helps get them going. Try de-worming the fish and see if that helps.
Sometimes having other fish in the tank will help get them going.

Temp: 80-82 degrees
Ammonia: 0
Nitrate: 15
Nitrite: 0
Ph: 8.4

I feed them Spirulina Flake 2 times a day, and them i swich off week to week with theese foods ( to keep a variety):
Omega One Tropical Flakes
Tetra Min Color Enhanced Flakes
O.S.I. Vivid Color
Nutrafin Maz Livebearer Flake

I do have other fish in the tank. I do once weekly w/c of 40 to 50 percent ( i would do them more often, but water prices have gone up... again)

As far as notchual humps ( i think thats what they are called), i think one of the fish has one. Its the half black one, which got the Sh*t beaten out of it when the other Half Black decided he didnt like the other one.
