Forgive me if this has already been answered -- I checked this forum's fish profile for angels and it didn't list a minimum tank size and I didn't turn up anything in searches.

When I use google to search for information on angelfish, I'm finding minimum tank size being listed as anything from 20 gallon minimum to 55 gallon minimum. I'm not sure which site to trust!

What is the minimum tank size (or tank height, as I've read the vertical room is important) for angels?

30 gals usually.

30 gallons first fish and 10 gallons for every other. A pair could maybe go in a 30 gallon tank. The tank must be at least 50 cm tall.

Ok that helps quite a bit. I converted 50cm and that's about 19.5 inches.
My 30 gallon is a 30 long (16 inches tall) so I guess I'm out of luck till I have space to set up my old 55!

Thanks for the help!

30 gallons for the first fish? Breeders keep pairs in a 20 high on a regular basis. Some keep 2 pairs in a divided 29. The 18" minimum height is better for veils, standards will do fine in a 16" high tank.

I've used the following chart as a guide to my mimimum stocking rates. Got it from some site so long ago I can't remember where it came from;

Newly free swimming fry 40 fry per gallon
Two week old fry 20 fry per gallon
Month old fry 10 fry per gallon
Pea size bodies 3 fish per gallon
Dime size bodies 2 fish per gallon
Nickel size bodies 1 fish per gallon
Quarter size bodies 1 fish per 2 gallons
Silver Dollar size bodies 1 fish per 3 gallons
Potential breeders 1 fish per 5 gallons
Show Specimens 1 fish per 10 gallons
One breeding pair 20 gallon high tank

You can stretch this to some point with proper tank maintainance & filtration. Double up on filtration, you could keep 5 angels in a 30 gallon with proper maintainance. 2 would work out just fine especially if they were standard fin. You could set up a nice tank with them as a centerpiece.

Thanks, Tolak!

So maybe I could have angels after all. I'm still researching though.

I have 3 swordtails in my 30-gal at the moment, but they're moving back to the 29 once the swordie fry in there are big enough to not get eaten. So then the only fish in my 30 will be a schoal of panda corys. I was thinking a pair of angels would be a nice centerpiece fish (not interested in breeding them really)... would they be ok with my pandas? And any other fish I could add (or should I just leave it with 5-6 corys and 2 angels)?

Cory work out well with angels, I have a few in most all of my angel tanks. A small plec like a bristlenose would be nice, help keep the tank clean. Once some of those sword fry grow out, you could add a few of them, especially if they add a little color variation to the tank.
