I have an angelfish who recently wont swallow anything he tries to eat. He kind of wanders around looking at the food float through the water. He will finally find a piece that he likes and will gulp it up. However, as fast as it goes it, he spits it back out. And then repeats the wandering around looking for a piece of food he will suck in and spit out step. What is going on? He doesnt look sick on the outside and doesnt act any different besides his abnormal eating.

I have had several angelfish do this to me over the past year with not good luck at all. I have no idea whats going on. Any ideas or threads you can point me to for information? Thanks for all of your help in advance.

BTW I have a 55 Gallon Tank and 2 Emperor 280 Biowheel Filters and the testing of the water showed that it was normal.

How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Does he look thin or bloated.
What does it look like when he goes to the toilet.
Does he swim on his side.
Checks his gills to see if the look red and inflamed or pale with excess mucas.
Any excess slime on his body.
Does he look pale or darker in colour.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Any laboured breathing.

Spitting food out can be gills flukes, bacterial, internal parasites.

Slow to eat angels get metronidazole in my setup.

2 other Angels (not veiled), 5 Rummy nose tetras, 1 Black Ghost Knifefish, 2 cory cats, 1 pleco

Nitrites= 0, Ammonia = 0, Nitrates = 10, pH = 7.8 I know that the pH is high but they have been in pH that high since I've had them (I use city water as buying water for a 55 is too expensive with frequent water changes and evaporation)

He looks thin
I havn't seen him excrete
He swims normally
Gills look normal, no indication of inflamation
No excess slime
His color looks the same
No flicking or rubbing
Breathing seems to be normal.

You have three angels? Could two have paired and are attacking the third stressing him out?

No, I used to have 4 and I had an actual paired angels ( i bought them as a pair), but one instantly died over night. Ate in the evening, looked fine except maybe some labored breathing and was dead by 9 am.

Well I decided to do nothing and treat with no medication as they have done nothing in the past. I thought I would let him decide whether he would beat it or not. He didnt eat for around 3 weeks. Recently, He's been taking down about 1 flake of food for the past week which was a good sign. He's awfully skinny. Today however, he is eating like a crazed fish. Sucking in big flakes and chowing down. Im really happy that he was able to beat it without medication. I havn't had much luck at all with non-eating angelfish even with medication. This is awesome!!!

Did he lose wieght due to not eating.
Being skinny and not eating can be internal parasites.
What does it look like when your fish to the toilet.
Is the anus enlarged or red and inflamed.

Im sure he lost weight due to not eating, but he's eating regularly now and all seems fine with him. No problems anymore. He is very perky and eats as much as he can find now.
