Has anyone ever tried to breed/pair up angels? I have a bigger angel and just got three juveniles and I'm hoping I can get a pair out of someone :D I was told when they are dime size they are old enough to breed but I'm not sure how long it takes for them to pick their mates..

just wondering if anyone has gone through this and how long it took :)

My current breeding pair started with a female of about 3-4 inches and I saw a silver about quarter size maybe a little bigger for 1.75 at a local wholesale fish supply store and I couldn't resist. They paired up in about 4-6 weeks and were breeding after about 2 months. Now 4 months later the male has outgrown the female hes a greedy boy  . But unless you seriously want to pursue breeding and grow out tanks and equipment, spawning is a pain in the butt.

Also just checked your tank stats a single pair of Angels places your 29 gallon pretty well stocked. Also your severum cannot live in a 29 gallon they really need a minimum of 55 gallons -_-

Four fish will give you an 87.5% chance of a pair. At dime body size the fish is 8, maybe 10 weeks old if raised properly, much too young to pair & breed. The youngest I've had with a viable spawn would be about 7 months of age, and between quarter and half dollar body size, though I have heard of fish spawning starting at 5 months of age. The average is 9 months of age & closer to dollar body size, though the females will grow a bit slower with breeding pairs.

Plan on having tank space for growout room, as well as starting a brine shrimp hatchery. To get them to dime body size you need about a half gallon per fish, nickel body size need a gallon each. A small spawn is 200 fish, larger spawns exceed 600 fish, this will tell you how much tank space you will need. Overcrowding will give you fish with chopped fins & a slower growth rate, it's a choice between either a lot of space or heavy culling.

Yea after reading up on it I was fairly certain that I need a grow out tank but was just curious of how long I had before I really needed one. From your estimates I have a while before they even pair up (If I'm lucky) :good:

And I really need to change my stats..sadly the severum is no longer here, so no worries there :( I would really like to breed but am perfectly fine just having a pretty tank for now..but while keeping 4 angels I thought it would be wise to prepare ;) Is it necessary to have a hatchery or can you buy bbs?

thanks for the advice!

If you want a near certainty of getting a pair, the number required to be over 96% certain is 6 fish. It is a simple probability thing but at 96+% I find it is certain enough for practical purposes.

To get a good spawn in may take a lot of patience even after your fish pair up. You should also be prepared to cull (kill) deformed or bad fish to help keep the gene pool decent and help you make close to even or a profit. Keep in mind growing out angels take space, a lot of space. A nickel sized fish needs 1 gallon of water and with 200-600 fry per spawn your looking at a lot of grow out tanks. They can also spawn every 10-14 days! So be prepared its going to cost a lot and take a lot of effort before you come close to making a profit. Also don't get attached to your juvis once they pair up its by by to the others  Oh and if you can find bbs then no you don't need a hatchery but usually you can only find adult brine shrimp so you have to hatch your own, its more cost effective anyway.

bye bye?? O.O nos! lol you can't just move them to a different tank once(if) the others pair up? and is there a way to keep the pair from spawning? I know that if you keep their diet varied and have a nice habitat for them that they might breed but is there a way too keep them from doing so? Seeing as one might have 200 fry on their hands it doesn't seem practical to encourage them to do a "round 2" ;) 10 days after

I just let my bristlenose plecos eat the eggs, or you can just remove the eggs and get rid of them. I know it sounds bad but population control happens naturally in the wild you have to do it yourself in captivity. Also you can move the other angels to another tank but 2 angels in a 29 gallon is your max especially if they pair up :good:
