Hi there, I've had my angels for a couple years now and i recently began redoing their tank. Added some new plants and another piece of wood.
I have been noticing a lot more aggression from two of the angels, not towards the tank mates but towards each other. I've taken a video to put on here. also tried to get some photos to see if i can a little bit of help sexing the fish. I beleive the darker angel is a male. But i am unsure.

Male(i think)

Female(i think)

Here is a link to the Video.

Im unsure if the aggression is just that aggression or is it two mates testing each other.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Ben

Even though there has been no posts im going to update anyway lol.

Some good news and some bad news.

Good news is angels have paired up, bad news i predicted the wrong ones. When i got home today from school i noticed that the suspected male was still chasing and nipping at the suspected female, however now the other angel had joined in and i think i spotted her egg tube, slanting to the rear im guessing female. (please someone confirm this i cant find my fishbook) The two were sticking quite close together and very much teaming on the odd female. Here fins were begging to tear and i noticed some scale damage. I ran to set up my hospital tank (15gal) unfortunatly the only tank i had i wish it were bigger but this is only temp until my gf tank finishs its cycle and will house her. I still had heater and airstone and i took out one of the internal filters from the original tank for the hospital tank so that she has a cycled mature filter.

Anywho snapped some pics of her and got the best pic of damage as i could.

you cant see her tube here but i can see it when im at the tank. Can anyone tell me about how far the tube will pertrude?

very bottom right picture looks like a female to me, the one on the right not sure. I look at the round part going from the mouth to the top of the fin if it has an indent its usually a female and if its round its normally a male there are other ways to tell as well size of the fish when mature is another way females are usually smaller. It almost looks like you have 2 females to me but I could be wrong. Maybe someone here can shed some light on the subject

New update on a very slow thread. I think i've spotted her breeding tube. It had been showing earlier but not this prominent. i snapped a pretty good pic of it so for you faint at heart this section is X rated.

Can anyone identify this as her breeding tube?

I found the eggs this morning. Exactly where i asked her to put them lol. i had added a peice of flat rocks in the corner of the tank and near some plant and wood, an easily defend able area of the tank, This morning i came down to her hovering over the rock (its at an angle). Never seen her do that before, and i knew they had been around that rock before and biting at it. assumed this to be them cleaning the rock. Dad is now on guard and chasing away the tetras. Wish i had somewhere to put them but the tanks are cycling.

I've read about 4 days till the eggs become free swimming? is this correct?

Day 0: Eggs spawned in streaks, are clear or translucent.
Day 1: Some infertile eggs turn white.
Day 2: More eggs turn white, wiggling tails emerge from clear eggs. Some white eggs may get fuzzy.
Day 3: Tadpole shape forms with large yolk sack, fry remain stuck to the slate.
Day 4: Small eyes form.
Day 5: Eyes grow large, yolk sack shrinks. Start brine shrimp hatchery.
Day 6: Some fry are free swimming.
Day 7: All free swimming, time to start feeding.

Thank you Tolak, i must have read wrong. Pretty excited see if how they parent, as i have heard some really cool things about their behavour

congrats on your eggs, mine laid yesterday as well. however am I correct in saying your pair and eggs are still with other fish? if so they will most likely get eaten when they hatch if not before by other tank mates. If pos i'd remove the eggs to another tank, well that's if you want to raise the babies

Yes there are other fish in the tank with the eggs. I have no room yet for the other fish as my spare tank is cycling. I'm not prepared to raise the spawn so if i loose the fry i'm not too concerned, as soon as my tank is cycled and i get my other fifty cleaned and filled that tank will be egg/fry tank. I also need to find somewhere to take the fry if or when the live.

Good luck with your own spawn, thanks for the reply!

Ya thats what i thought but the owner of the lfs in my town isn't a real nice guy, staff are nice but to be nice he's an idiot. going to start looking around at some shops in the city. How long have your angels been spawning?

this is there first spawn, a day and a half in they've only picked off a few fungus ones so guess in the next few days i'll see how many babies I get

Well then you've qualified for some congrats too then on you first spawn :good: checked the cycling tank today and thought would be going faster but its not lol. will start prepping the 50gal tonight clean it out and boil it and such. Go find some sponge filters i think. Then i can mature the sponges before i add them.

thanks, well I'm now on day 2 and still lots of eggs with the parents doing a good job. got a feeling they will move the eggs today as the plant is getting a good clean, maybe preparing it for the fry

Ya, mine attempted a move yesterday evening, from the vertical rock to the silicon on the corner above the rock. Some eggs were sticking but most were not and i noticed Mom drop a couple. She caught most of them as they fell but a few made it through and ended up in the gravel. Not sure if it was the eggs getting dropped or eaten by the tetras but the numbers are dwindling down a bit. Maybe about 60 -70 eggs left. There tails have emerged and they are doing quite a bit of wiggling. Looks very cool.
