Hi, just got 2 angels and although they were not in the same tank at the LFS as soon as they were released one swam straight over to the other one and hasn't left it's side since

I was wondering if this means a) they are a pair and b) they are likely to be one male and one female?

One of them swims away from the other and the other one just follows so thinking if it may be a female fed up with the male lol...

difficult to tell

are they adults??

u may just have to wait and see what happens can u see their breeding tubes?

No they are fairly young, I would say no more than 2" long, could it be they are just sticking together due to their age?

What do their breeding tubes look like?

they are far too young yet

what size of tank do u have?

u wont be able to tell secx until adult and wanting to breed

I'd also say they are indeed too young... When they start pairing off, they'd seem to be fighting constantly with each other, but as soon as another fish intervenes, they stand up together against the intruder.

Indications that they are ready to breed is when they both develop ovipositors and this is when you can sex them with the male ovipositor being thin and more pointed than the female's thicker and "blunt" tube like ovipositor.

Just had a quick google search - I thought sexing angels was hard and the pics made it look easy.

Do thier ovipositors show even if they are 2x males or females and not ready to breed?

Definately haven't had anything that looks like fighting yet.

How quickly should I expect them to grow into adults?

Currently in my 56l until my 260l finishes it's cycle

No... The ovipositors only start showing about 1 day prior to them starting to scrub some surface (glass/slate or plant leaf).....to deposit the eggs on..... and normally not before they are around 3 inches long. (not high) Mine usually at about 8 - 9 months old.

Ok will keep an eye on them.

At a guess how old would you say angels are who are 2" long?

Vicki

Depends on the environment (temp/tank size/water quality/exchange rate/ etc.) & what they've been fed on... Mine are being fed live Brine shrimp from the moment they are free swimming and reach 2 inches in about (I'd say) 5 to 7 months....Under stressful conditions some of them even don't reach 2 ".... That's why it is important to know the source of your stock if your intentions are breeding them.

I wouldn't say my intentions are breeding them, it would just be nice to know whether or not I should prepare for fry some day.

How often do you feed brine shrimp? Do you feed out of those bags you get on most LFS counters, if so how much of that at any one time?

Sorry for all the q's!

No... we havent got LFS here so I don't really know what is in those bags. I hatch them in a brine sollution with lots of aeration and the syphon the live shrimps off early in the morning and again in the afternoon..... (each hatching of about 1 x level table spoon lasts for 2 days) by which time I've already got the next batch going to ensure a constant supply) I do feed Tetramin no.1 for egglayers twice in between the morning and night brine feeds and eventually upgrade this to Tetramin no.2 for live bearers.... then finger crushed flakes etc. etc.
