Hey Guys,

I am new to this forum so hope i make sense.

I have 3 large angel fish in my tank and had them for over 1 year. when ever i add any new fish they try to eat them and the majority succeding.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? is it normal? and if anyone has any solutions to this problem?

I was thinking of trying to isolate the new fish for a few days in a breeding net or such like.

I dont want to waste my money or keep supplying my angel fish with live food. but feel the need to introduce new fish.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Eltz

Also my angels attack each other. they nip and chase each other all the time. at first i thought one or two were the bullys but they all attack each other. this has been going on since i had them and never thought much of it because none have ever been injured. is this normal? or how do i overcome the problem?

Thanks

Eltz

you definaltly should not add anything bite size to your tank as angels with consider this food!!!!!
juvi guppies/neon/cardinal tetras are angels staple diet in the wild
what have you added to the tank?

to my next question,,,
how big is the tank?
what fish are in the tank?
3 angels is a bad mix<2 is company threes a crowd
is there two angels that seem to stay together most of the time, much like a couple

bristlenose plecs go well with angels as do candy stripe plecs and congo tetras/colombian tetras/head/tail light tetras/ ensuring there not bite size
full grow guppies will also be ok but dont exspect any surving fry

yup, completley normal. angels are predatory aggressive teritorial fish, they can make a lovely addition to a community tank, but you do need to be careful what other fish you put in with them. just get bigger fish to go with them.

thanks for your replys,

I have tried adding small fish because i like to watch them grow but I will try adding some larger fish, they didnt eat the bubble molly i added but did eat neon tetras and small catfish. so I will try one or two larger fish.

In response to them attacking each other, they do not gang up or stay in pairs, they all have a go at each other. that is why i have never thought it as being a major problem, it seems as though its all against all, if you know what i mean.

Also in my tank I have a orange tailed shark, 2 clown loaches, 2 glass fish, a large catfish, a bubble molly and 2 red nosed rasboras. I want to add more fish but was worried about them all being attacked but i might try a few larger fish.

how big is the tank?
lenth/depth/width????
angels like other cichlids can be aggresive with other cichlids esp there own kinds!!!!
do you not notice 2 angels being more friendly toward each other?
if how ever there is no signs of abuse, cuts, tears rips etc then leave them be!!!!otherwise you will have to rehome something!!

My tank is 54 litres, measuring 23x12x12.

The angel fish r approx 4 inches from fin to fin. there is plenty of room for them to swim and manouver. r they 2 big for my tank??

I have never noticed any 2 being more friendly, but all three can attack each other and all at different times. sometimes there is slight redness on the fish after being attacked but they never act distressed or hurt.

If this is normal then I will leave them continue as they are, but if not i may unfortunatley have to split them up.

Sorry but your tank is way too small for Angelfish. They really need a tank of at least 3ft wide and 1.5ft tall. And if your tank is stocked as per your signature, then you REALLY dont need to put any more fish in there as its heavily overstocked and some of the fish in there will grow too big for that tank.

Woha.. That's a lot of fish in ~50L. I wouldn't keep 3 Angels in 50L, let alone the rest of the stock. You really need to re home them, or get a bigger tank. As mentioned above, 18" high is the minimum for Angles. It's obvious why they are aggressive, they are constantly fighting for territory. Those loaches alone can grow to 6+".

The rule of thumb is 10G(US) (~40L per Angel). You really should look at investing in a bigger tank, look on ebay, there's 2nd hand ones on there cheap all the time.

I myself have 2 Angles (1 juvi), 2 clown loaches, 1 bn, 8 harlequins, 6 red phanton tetras, 2 flame dwarf gouramis in a 18" tall, 200L tank with a 1000lph 305 canister. My Gold Marble will give the black velvet juvi a love tap to let it know it's in its space, but that's about it (the black juvi is growing and learning to hold its own now though). I will probably put something else in when I figure out what I want, maybe another Angel.

The other thing you have to watch is by housing them in such a small tank, it is inevitable that you will stunt their growth.

you can keep a pair of adult angels in a 2foot tank preferebly 18inchs high , and maybe keep a small plec and thats it. you really need to sort out stocking as your gonna probably have alot of problems some of your fish wwill outgrow this tank easily!! :good:
