And So It Begins- The York Saga

I just cut the photo period down during the cycle.

Right just looking into the fert side of things i may well start adding some liquid carbon. What else would you guys suggest i add as ferts?

Liquid carbon might not provide enough carbon for the plants. Not to mention it's going to cost a bomb on a tank that size!
It would be easier to remove/turn off one of the light tubes and run the tank as non-CO2.
If you do continue with the liquid carbon, you'll soon find out if it's not providing enough carbon. By that, I mean you'll be seeing unhealthy plants and lots of species of algae.

More light means more CO2 is needed.

More CO2 means more nutrients are needed. So when either using liquid carbon or injecting gaseous CO2, enough nutrients must be supplied. The most important being macro nutrients (NPK), and then micro nutrients (trace elements).

The one thing i have missed when doing a fishless cycle is all the little critters (except the snails :< )that hitch hike into your tank, I was peeing into the tank this evening and noticed something squiggleing in there, i have planaria, And on closer inspection i also have hydra, and some small type of invert scurring around on my substrate.

I`m sure once i get fish in there all these pests will become food, and i will have some happy chain loaches for a few weeks devouring the snails.

I really hope you weren't! lol Think that might give you an ammonia spike!

the acid in the urine will kill the hydra off mate!

Ok, Ok.... enogh jokes about pee we`re not in the pub now.

In other news, our nitrites have started to drop.

hmmm processing 5ppm of ammonia in less than 12 hrs, yet the nitrites are through the roof :(

Nitrite test goes dark purple then turns blue a minuite later.

Getting angry now.

Urine is an aqueous solution of greater than 95% water, with the remaining in order of decreasing concentration urea 9.3 g/l, chloride 1.87 g/l, sodium 1.17 g/l, potassium 0.750 g/l, creatinine 0.670 g/l and other dissolved ions, inorganic and organic compounds
