Greetings all.

Yesterday i saw this weird looking fish in the aquarium and i just had to get it.

Its got a long snout, and mouth so small that i dont know what it eats!

Can anyone identify it for me?? and maybe give me a few tips on how to take care of it?

Is it hardy? What does it eat? freshwater or brackish? active or lazy? etc etc

I tried searching all over the internet and cant find anything! the closest things i found were elephant nose fishes and halfbeaks.. but they dont have that spotted flame looking tail :(

PS: Apologies for the bad quality of the headshot. But basically it has a snout that is kinda like an anteater

Hi there : at first glance it looks like a spiny eel from s.e.asia.

Could be Macrognathus aculeatus (Baensch Atlas Vol 1 page 848) . grows to about 13 inches.

Fresh/brackish water.

Mainly live foods such as worms, mosquito lavae, tubifex. Most Spiny Eels dont take well to flake food, so feeding can be a bit tricky

Most of the spiny eels are nocturnal, agressive to same species, and can be predetory towards smaller fish. So should be kept with similar size or larger fishes

Also very good at finding small gaps in the cover glasses, and can often be found dried up on the floor in the morning!!
