An Ace At Fish But A Bust At Plants!

hi all,
title says it all.
i want some plants for my 12 gallon. i like the hornwort and java plants some swords are ok too.
but anyway! i want some of those plants that act like a carpet.
so, is there an easy, cheap way to keep plants alive? i'm game for any advice.

12 gallon,
light made for plants, i don't know watts or any thing
gravel, i want to mix with small gravel and maybe some sand
no fertilizers
1 aquaeon 100 and i am setting up a new tetra EX20

i would go with an 18w light,
seen as it is inert you will need more nutrients in th water column to make up fo it.
Tropica Plant Nutrition+ would be ideal. dosed at 3ml a day/ or every other day.
What are the turnover on those?

Well, Glossostigma needs more light than Marsilea. That's all I know.
