Any one no any big retailer that sells ammonia. Boots don't stock it any more. Home base don't sell it.

my local hardware shop sells it, so it might be worth trying smaller hardware shops.

got some from Homebase yesterday

Shoulda said - I've got an 80% full bottle in my kitchen cupboard.

To the OP, if you are trying independent hardware shops, make sure you shake the bottle before you buy it. If it froths up, like a bottle of kiddies bubble stuff, don't buy it. If the bubbles disappear like they would with pure water, then it's ok. I understand that Jeyes Kleenoff ammonia is fine, but best to shake, JIC.

What's the ammonia for? Is it to help cycle the tank?

I got mine online on Amazon.

I've heard that Boots don't stock it but you can order it online and they'll get it in for you.

It is to start and to use throughout a fishless cycle. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/277264-beginners-resource-center/
As pointed out to me by other members and is pinned. Read up and enjoy.

It is not to "help cycle the tank", it is to actually "cycle the tank". It replicates the ammonia produced by the fish, so the bacterial colonies grow, but without exposing any fish to actual ammonia. Once the bacteria can process a certain dosage of ammonia in 12 hours, you can then fully stock the tank in one go.

That's the precis version, for the full version, read the link posted by Phoenix.

If you click on the calculator link at the top of the forum, it has a handy calculator for ammonia. I found it wasn't quite right for me, but it should give you a rough idea and then you can work from there.
