Hi all,

I'm new to Fish Forum so just finding my way round the site!

Needs some helpful advice or rather someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong...

I've worked with fish in a couple of different shops for about 3 years and kept them as a hobby up until a couple of years ago! I still remember much of what i was taught and taught others accordingly but there's always something new to learn eh?!

After a 2 year gap, i've bought a small 35 Litre Arcadia tank, it's sparcely planted also with wood, small rocks and sand. water temp is 24 centigrade with small internal filter with spiung and capsole of activated carbon.

We set the tank up, but didn't add the wood until a few days later. Cycle has been used for the bacteria biult, i even added a very small amount of flake food to help bring on Ammonia for the filter to learn to deal with.

After a week we added some fish, water was tested first, all Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate were only at trace levels and PH was Alkaline (8.2) as expected in our area. - (I was warded off using a PH buffer with live plants in place).

We added 6 small Indian Lampeyes, never had them before but they are a type of KIllie fish from what i can tell and are brooding.

on adding the fish I added Stress Coat and left the light off, a day later i performed a partial water change.

2 days after introduction the water was tested once again, Ammonia was higher than ever, dark green around 3.0 - 4.0, Nitrite was equally very dark pink & Nitrate was red. This may have been to do with a cube if bloodworkm added which teh fish did not eat straight away.

I have preformed several water changes in the past wk out of emergency action, levels are gradually (very gradually) coming down and i have been using cycle and Ammo Lock accrding to teh guidelines.

Is there anything else i can do???? don't want the fish to be swimmign round in the fish tank worls equivalent of Chynobl!!! Also they seem quite happy in their murky tank for the moment. Is time, water changes, regular treamtment the way forward here?

Thanks in adavnce,

James

Welcome to the forum.
Sorry post in new to the hobby.

Hi James and welcome to TFF!

Wilder is right. The "New to the Hobby" forum is where we take on these questions. Its our "beginner's section" and section for tank startup, cycling etc.. that sort of topic. I'm one of the beginner's who hangs around there sometimes and tries to help out.

I'm a bit like you with various amounts of experience from the past in the hobby, but was pretty surprised once I got on TFF to find that there were so many more things to learn about the hobby and so much more detail out there to learn from all the very experienced hobbyists here!

Anyway, from the sound of it, there might be a good dose of lore about the nitrogen cycle and the details of good technique in fishless cycling and in "fish-in cycling" that would be a great adjunct for your own experience, which may have come more from retail store experiences or things like that.

Anyway, good luck and hope to see you over in the beginners section.
