I have my hospital tank set up. I am treating 2 GBR's that have wounds on the top of their heads. I am treating with maracyn and maracyn2. I have a topfin 30 on a 10 gallon tank. I was just wonder if it is a good idea to add some ammonia remover to my filter? I have the carbon removed and I just don't want any ammonia spikes. I plan on feeding them a few flakes every other day to give them some energy. The treatment will hopefully last 5 days. I am on day number 2. Thanks for the help everyone!

50% water change daily & redose, for 10-14 days. Double dose the water with a dechlorinator that neutralizes ammonia, you don't have to worry about the filter being cycled. Yes, I know what the package says. I also know what works best is different from what is on the package.

Here are a few pictures. They aren't the best. The GBR had this large wound appear real abruptly. I've been keeping track of the mark on the EBR's head for a few days and it appears to be growing and patches kind of flaking off. If you've seen this before, or the pictures help, and have a better recommendation for treatment I would appreciate the help. I'm not sure if this is from a little aggression or hole in head. I've read lateral line erosion is synonymous with hole in head. They do not seem to have that symptom.

 Awesome, the world needs more of us. :good: Antibiotics work the same for humans or animals, most of the ones used for animals were originally designed for human use. If you get a prescription for antibiotics it generally runs 10-14 days, same is you get an antibiotic for a dog or cat.

The average fishkeeper isn't going to go through the trouble of daily water changes & remeds for 10-14 days. Mardell knows that, and knows if they put that on the back of their product they would sell very little. The 5 days suggested is half way there, half way works, and for the average fishkeeper if it doesn't, oh well, go buy more fish, again. We look at things a little differently than that here.

Does your medication say to remove carbon or ammonia remover from your tank because these things can take it out :good:

Yeah it says to remove carbon. That's what my question was. If ammonia remover would counter the medication. They seem to be doing much better now. The male rams wound has shrunk significantly.

The additive in water conditioner doesn't remove ammonia, it converts it to ammonium. This is used the same as ammonia by your nitrifying bacteria, but is harmless to fish at levels found in an aquarium. So no, this will not affect the medication at all. Glad to hear he's healing up! :good:
