I know there are a lot of questions regarding the 'fishless cycle' but, i have just started mine tonight on a 215 litre tank.

Ihave been adding pure ammonia using an eye dropper bought from chemist( didnt want to add too much ). Up to now i have added 100 drops, is it normal to add this much or has something gone wrong?

According to the colour chart it is about 4ppm. The chart then jumps to 8ppm so i have to guess the inbetween.

Also my tap water is about 6.8ph but i have used coral sand which has brought it up to 7.5 which is great news as i want to keep Cichlids. :hyper:

I cannot answer your question directly, but I do know that i have bought ammonia from different stores over the past few years, and the concentration was different. So one bottle might take 100 drops and one bottle might only take 50-75.

Hi danon,

Getting my 28G up to 4ppm with the particular bottle of ammonia I bought takes easily over 100 drops, its written somewhere in our log book. Eventually I got so used to doing it I switched from drops to dropper squirts. I've got it so down now that I know 6 squirts will give me 2ppm and 12 will give me 4ppm.

Great that your coral sand is working so well.

Hi Danon,

Does your bottle tell you how much ammonia is in there? A typical concentration is 9.5% ammonia, but some bottles don't specify.

If it does tell you, there is an ammonia calculator here which will work out how many millilitres of your solution is required, so you don't need to mess around with drops.

Unfortunately, if your bottle doesn't specify the concentration, drops it is.

Cheers :good:
