Hi there, new to the forums and just wanted to christen my membership with a request. I see there is already sub categories for bettas/catfish etc and i thought it would be a good idea to implement themed set ups, eg Amazonian, Malawi lake cichlid etc.

As you can tell from my forum name im well into Amazonian set ups and always have been, i love all the tetras, plecs and dwarf cichlids that make them.

just my 2 pence :)

Personally, I would like a specialist amazon thread as well.

As I want an amazon tank, I have 1001 questions, and no really "proper", useful, place to ask them. It's not just the cichlids, not EVEN the cichlids for me, I'm more interested in the planting, the water chemistry, the unusual fish etc.

Amazon tanks ARE pretty common, I think that they probably do rate their own area.

the forums split into as least groups as possible so that the information is still easy to find yet u dont have to go through 10 forums to get it.

ive been on game forums where they have a forum for every game and its jus annoying having to go through them all jus to read what people have sed.

plus if you have amazon then there will be someone who wants another section for a different environment.

it jus goes on.

i dnt think its a bad idea. i jus think its easier the way it is now.

Like RipSlider said, amazonian tanks are a lot more specialized and theres more to think about than just the right cichlid.

One problem with the amazon is new world cichlid theory - amazonian catfish, amazonian characins(sp?), and amazonian plants to encompuss them all without a "biotype" area it would be best posted under general, if it was only characins or cichlids then under there respective area

However, at the end of the day, how many specific biotopes can be practically named?

We have a brackish area, we have two for cichlids, coving two highly specific biotopes, we have the varius different marine setups.

While there are many area's that fish come from, there are few additional area's which could warrent their own forum, maybe a new Guiena area or a Sri Lanka area, however the amazon IS a very well defined, very specialist area, which is differeeent to almost all other types of water setups, both in terms of chemistry, water colour, plants, lighting requirements, substartes etc.

I truely do think there is a good argument for having such an area.

The Amazon is a river that is 6,387 km in length (3,969 miles long) and in that length changes from a mountain stream into a river with an average discharge of 219,000 cubic metres per second (219,000,000 litres per second). [wiki]

I would be grateful if you could actually DEFINE the amazon biotope, as my memory recalls that the Amazon changes a lot of its physical natures during its journey from the Andes to the Atlantic
