Amazon Biotope

I didnt know that either and I read thaat cambomba comes from the amazon but they could be wrong :dunno: and what a cultivar? And rams arent found in the wild then where do they come from?

Ahh, no, I am incorrect. It is a pest plant found largely around the world. Nonetheless, it does need quite a bit of light and proper soil to grow in a home aquarium. Only one specialized for plants would be okay, and I suggest you look up the others too. Other than vallis and Java fern, I don't know many other plants that will just 'grow', but hey! I'm no plant expert, though if you want to recreate somewhere where Cardinals live, there are for example, no plants.

Now, when you say you know you want to do a blackwater biotope, what river are you trying to copy?

And a cultivar is a fish that's been created (or in this case, line bred) by man kind. Bolivian and many other Rams DO come from the wild, however the German Blue does not.

"cabomba"
It's growing in lakes near where I live , someone or some few must have dumped into local water here ...

highly invasive too..

I think black water areas will only have plants at the surface , because the sun-light won't penetrate the water well enough for normal/good plant growth .......read that somewhere , can't remember where
I agree there are so many possibilities as the river is huge , even black water , how bout shooting for a planted natural looking echo system , krib . .....either way good luck , you'll learn alot , keep us posted , maybe some pics

wow i really nead to do some reading.........

anyway my plans were this: 29 gal tank
stock: 1 angel, 1 m/f pair of german blue rams, 3 corries, 3 ottos, 5-7 cardinals or neons
decor: really small natural colored gravel, driftwood, lots of plants such as vallis, amazon swords, java fern etc
light: still need to work that out
and i was going to use blackwater extract for its properties of softening the water which i know angels and neon/cardinals like and the color it makes the water.

obviously this isnt really a biotope. so would this plan work out? also any other plants that would work besides those mentioned?

Wow I really need to do alot more reding I didnt know the amazon had smaller rivers i thought it was just one huge river. Are there any floating plants that come from this region that would be good for an aquarium? I will most def keep you posted when I start.

maybe , but :/ the floating plants might be more suited for a pond .......... I've seen pics off huge lilly pads too

I was thinking about it because I thought hatchet fish or maybe another top dwelling fish would like a bit of cover and it might give it a nice affect.

I used to want to make a south american biotope for my 70 gallon because all my fish were from there (until I got the clown loaches). :/

But I thought to myself how much of a hassle so I made a semi biotope with a buncha drift wood stumps and plastic plants. Much easier to maintain. pictures are in my signature.

Hope you dont give up on your dream... Im still a senior in high school so I have to make a tank according to my abilities and time. Best of of luck!

There doesent seem to be any floating plant so maybe I might not get any. depends on what I find. I there there discus biotope its kind of kool. Wouldnt the discus eat the cardinals? just want to know because angelfish do and i think they are smaller than discus

Kage I get where you are comin from I a sophmore with a lot of spare time. By the way your fish are beautiful.

Cabomba is found in South America, Crytocoryne is found in South-East Asia.

The smaller rainforest streams and tributaries tend to contain little aquatic plantlife. This is because the dense forest canopy blocks much of the sunlight.

It's impossible to make generalisations about the Amazon basin. It's the largest river on the planet, located in one of the most diverse places on earth, so it contains a wide variety of very different ecosystems. It is "the greatest river on earth", 4000 miles long and 200 miles wide at it's estuary. It and it's thousand plus tributaries dump 700 million cubic feet of water per second into the Atlantic ocean in the rainy season which accounts for 20% of the earth's total. It was discovered because European sailors discovered fresh water 200 miles out into the ocean.

Got some time to kill? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_River

As you can tell, I've always been fascinated by this river which is why I chose to try and bring a bit of it into my home. I was going to appologise for getting off topic, but maybe I'm not ;)

That was an interesting site. Thanx for the link.

Would anybody happen to know where anubis the plant originated from? Maybe I could put on a peice of bog wood.

And I was thinking about ordering this fish. does anybody have any expirence with them? Will they pick on the cardinal / neons or any of the other fish I mentioned? I they do come from the blackwater region from what I read.

I keep cockatoos , the apisto in the pic looks like a borelli , can't say for sure , if it is , it's a fairly hardy apisto , peaceful by cichlid standards , not sure where they inhabit , a google search can tell you .

anubias are a West African plant .........

You were right it is a borelli apisto. :D Im gonna order it soon. It comes from the Amazon river basin. They are pretty little fish and are your typical apisto. They said bloodfin tetras and peppered cories are from the same region that they are.
